Augustus Gloop is one of the four main antagonists (alongside Violet Beauregarde, Veruca Salt, and Mike Teavee) the 2005 movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

He is a gluttonous kid from Hailing from Germany.

He is portrayed by Philip Wiegratz.

His Qualities[]

What Makes Him Entertaining?[]

  • He is constantly played for laughs and not taken seriously in the slightest, with several comedic moments such as him accidentally eating part of a ticket, being told where the cameramen were, falling into the chocolate river, eating his own fingers and more.
  • The 1971 film portrays him as a sympathetic and affable scapegoat that didn't even do anything detestable in the slightest to deserve his presumed death, hence why Charlie tried to save him.
  • All portrayals did an excellent job with portraying the character.
  • The 1971 film considerably seems to be handsome and not looking too fat compared to his 2005 appearance.

What Makes Him Detestable?[]

  • All adaptations of Augustus do not even know when to stop their addictions over candy, hence their disgusting and out of shape physical appearances. He is meant to be a kid representing bad habits.
  • In the 2005 film, he was really mean to Charlie on the way into the Chocolate Factory because he asked if he wants chocolate but then told him he should've bought some.
  • He has no concern for Willy Wonka's Chocolate Room as he proceeded to destroy everything in his sight just to satisfy his endless hunger. It reaches its peak when he tried to help himself with the Chocolate River that Wonka says isn't to be touched by human hands.
  • In the 2005 film, his defeat wasn't played for any sympathy, but rather for karma because he likely became the very thing he loved to eat after being transported into the Fudge Room - a person made out of chocolate, in addition to knowing he’s gluttonous and remains proud of it.
  • In the 2005 film, he still didn't learn his lesson at the end as he continues to eat his fingers. At this point, even his mom tries to restrain him from doing so.
  • Has no sympathetic qualities whatsoever in the 2005 film and everybody treats him with contempt because Grandma Josephine called him a despicable boy after seeing him on TV, the Oompa Loompas sang a song mocking his gluttony and Willy Wonka mentions that he is among all of the rotten kids who displayed bad behavior.
