Barry Charles is the secondary antagonist of the Cartoon Network animated series We Bare Bears. He is Ice Bear's arch-nemesis and arguably the most significant antagonist in the series.
He is voiced by Kevin McHale.
His Qualities[]
What Makes Him Entertaining?[]
- He is obsessed with stealing Ice Bear's Roomba, with this being emphasized through one of his main lines which is "When I want something, I get it". This rather cold line shows that he is quite obsessed with what he wants and he will do what he can to achieve his goal without caring what would happen and helps set the stage for the overall plot of the Icy Nights duology, in which he is the main antagonist.
- In his debut episode, "Icy Nights", he first says this line when Ice Bear simply tells him that the Roomba is not for sale, showing that when he wants something, he will take it no matter what. He later repeats the line after revealing to a captured Ice Bear that he reprogrammed the successfully stolen Roomba to be used in robot arena fights.
- In his second appearance, "Icy Nights II", it is revealed that he wants to obtain the Roomba in order to earn the respect of his father, who is the head of an unnamed billion dollar company that desperately tries to steal the vacuum's tech for profit purpose.
- As the leader of the Techies Gang and their most respected and acclaimed member, Barry is very intelligent and demonstrates a strategic mind, making his villainous plans both cool and exciting in the Icy Nights duology. He can also be very persuasive, though he has yet to win over Ice Bear or Yana. Additionally, he is shown to be good with technology, being skilled at programming robots and making a comment on how others call him and his henchmen "brogrammers". These factors all give him an Evil is Cool presence.
- He has a few comedic moments in "Icy Nights II", such as lashing out at Yana after she remarks that his obsession with defeating Ice Bear makes it sound like he has a crush and having a running gag of Yana poking fun at the topic of him seeking his father's approval.
- His appearances in We Bare Bears have subsequently made the show more action-packed and serious, as he is taken more seriously than most villains in the series.
- Much like how Agent Trout from We Bare Bears: The Movie was a personal antagonist to Grizz, Barry serves as a personal villain to Ice Bear.
- In response to Ice Bear promising to find him and finish him one day in "Icy Nights", Barry sarcastically replies "good luck" before his hologram fizzles out. This makes him have a positive impact on the story as this leaves Ice Bear with an unfinished score to settle.
- In "Icy Nights II", upon walking in and greeting Ice Bear (whom he had lured into a trap involving a kidnapped Yana), his mere presence is enough for Ice Bear to flashback to the events of their first encounter and remember when the Roomba was destroyed and when Barry escaped.
- Upon getting defeated in "Icy Nights II" with his giant cell phone robot getting destroyed, he swears revenge on Ice Bear before Roomba completely destroys the phone screen.
- Much like how Agent Trout from We Bare Bears: The Movie was a personal antagonist to Grizz, Barry serves as a personal villain to Ice Bear.
- His voice actor, Kevin McHale, does a great job at bringing out his personality and character through an incredible voice acting performance.
- He appears to be based on pre-redeemed Prince Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender for the following reasons:
- Both characters get burn scars that cover the left half of their faces.
- Both characters seek the respect of their father.
- Both characters are associated with fire. Zuko was a fire bender, as well as the prince of the Fire Nation, while Barry works for a company with a flaming logo.
- Like most characters in the series, his design is pretty decent. In "Icy Nights II" he gains an electrical burn scar over his left eye which makes his facial appearance look similar to that of Prince Zuko, who also has a burn scar on the left side of his face.
- He serves as a contrasting antagonist to fellow We Bare Bears villain Ari Curd, as both rely on robotics and are the heads of their respective companies. While Ari is more affable but oblivious to the feelings of others as she experiments on all three of the bears simply for scientific research and puts them through a terrifying virtual reality experience that left them traumatized, Barry is more of a card-carrying villain who's only interested in stealing Ice Bear's Roomba to impress his hard-to-please father and does not care about what he has to do in order to accomplish this goal.
What Makes Him Detestable?[]
- He commits a number of heinous crimes in his two episode appearances considering that he is the show's secondary villain. He also stands out among most villains in the series as particularly detestable due to being a completely unsympathetic antagonist to Ice Bear with no redeeming qualities, along with the fact that his actions are played very seriously:
- In "Icy Nights", Barry keeps insisting that he will take the Roomba even after Ice Bear tells him that it is not for sale. He later steals the Roomba after Ice Bear goes back into the grocery store and reprograms the vacuum cleaner to be a pit fighter in a robot arena. Ice Bear finds his way to the Techies Gang Headquarters and gets captured, with Barry trying to recruit him into joining the Techies Gang and later making him fight a reprogrammed Roomba in the robot fighting pit. After Ice Bear manages to break free of his restraints and regain control over the Roomba, Barry orders his henchmen to deploy their robots into the arena and end him. When Ice Bear is eventually pinned down after an intense fight, the Techies Gang destroys the Roomba while laughing evilly, provoking him into a rage in which he destroys all of the robots in the arena and causes all of the techies (save for Barry) to leave out of fear. In the end, Barry remains fearless and encloses Ice Bear on how he will be one step further from him, and is revealed to be merely a hologram after Ice Bear tries to kick him.
- In "Icy Nights II", Barry kidnaps Yana and brings her to his headquarters. He then hacks into the TV in the Bears' cave and broadcasts a message (while disguising his voice) threatening to harm Yana if Ice Bear does not hand over the vacuum. When Ice Bear gets his message and arrives to free Yana, he gets apprehended by Barry's robot bodyguards, and Barry himself appears and attempts to personally get the Roomba after being embarrassed by his strict father but fails upon being electrocuted by the vacuum and runs off. He later ruthlessly fights Ice Bear and Yana with the largest of his robots and ultimately gains the upper hand, incapacitating them long enough to get ahold of the Roomba. Then, he tries to kill them both upon stating that he has no further use for either of them as now the vacuum was his, all just so he can gain his father’s respect.
- He gets away with his crimes without suffering huge losses, having Kick the Dog moments in "Icy Nights" when he has the Roomba destroyed out of spite and later when he mocks Ice Bear about how he failed to avenge his thievery.
- He is shown to be mean to his underlings in Bad Boss moments during "Icy Nights", as he frequently insults the Techies Gang members working for him.
- He is the most ruthless and darkest villain so far in the series since he has no problem with killing people, and his unsympathetic nature and lack of remorse for his crimes make him irredeemable.
- He is too violent, sadistic and arrogant to be a Magnificent Baddie, as in "Icy Nights II" he attempts to kill both Ice Bear and Yana with his robot after overpowering them during their battle as well as trying to finish them off with the robot's giant laser cannon out of sadistic enjoyment, and he ends up underestimating the Roomba’s tiny axe and laughing at how ridiculous it is, distracting him long enough for Ice Bear to deliver the final blow and defeat him.
