Big Brother is the overarching antagonist of George Orwell's dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four.
What Makes Him Entertaining?[]
- He is one of the most symbolic dictator villains in dystopian novels, and possibly in all the fictional history, which has been influencing the characterization of dystopian dictators for over decades.
- His maxim "Big Brother is watching you" is also considered very iconic.
- He is so manipulative that all the members in INGSOC worships him fanatically, seeing him as the supreme leader and savior.
- He keeps an intimating presence even without showing up. He never appears directly, but his face is shown everywhere including on telescreen, with the phrase "Big Brother is Watching".
- He is extremely enigmatic, to the point the readers speculate whether he is a real human or is just a symbol fabricated by INGSOC.
What Makes Him Detestable?[]
- He is a ruthless dictator that rules Oceania with his iron fist.
- He keeps warring over the contested territories with East Asia and Eurasia, causing countless deaths and bloodsheds.
- He established a totalitarian governmental system where all the people are oppressed and brainwashed, and founded the ministry of peace, plenty, love and truth for propaganda and torture.
- He bans all the people's free thinking, labelling them "thought criminals".
- He is behind all the tragedies in the story, breaking up Winston and Julia and brainwashing Winston Smith from a liberal fighter into his fanatical worshipper.
