Bill Cipher is the main antagonist of the Disney animated series Gravity Falls.
He is an ancient dream demon from the Second Dimension who wishes to trigger an event known as "Weirdmageddon," in which the Nightmare Realm and the Fourth Dimension are connected together.
His Qualities[]
What Makes Him Entertaining?[]
- He is a charismatic and faux-affable trickster who is very good at getting people to make deals with him.
- His book, "The Book of Bill", manages to capture the inner workings of his mind perfectly. Also, him making a mess out of history is very much like Bill. Besides, some of the evidences are just downright hilarious, like him influencing literal dolphins into making an interdimensional portal, only to end up with a "finterdormensional portal", or even a snake oil merchant he influenced, Silas Birchtree, being defeated by an old lady named Emilie Butternubbins.
- While they don't detract from his heinousness, he has a multitude of comedic moments, mostly black comedy that shows his chaotic personality.
- He has an iconic design inspired by the real-world Eye of Providence symbol. Additionally, a lot of viewers think he is absolutely adorable.
- Alex Hirsch does an extremely amazing performance of voicing him, perfecting his faux-affable and comedic nature, while also revealing his sadistic and charismatic true personality when he comes into the picture as the new threat to the Pines.
- He manipulated Standford Pines into building a portal to serve his agenda, all the while using his charm to make Stanford think he was his friend.
- In his debut, he nearly succeeded in stealing the code to the Mystery Shack's safe, and his ensuing temper tantrum was absolutely hilarious.
- He tricked Dipper into making a deal with him where Dipper had to give Bill "a puppet," which Bill used as a chance to possess Dipper's body.
- While possessing Blendin Blandin, he tricked Mabel into giving him the dimensional rift by saying that he'd make summer endless. He imprisoned Mabel in a prison bubble where she could live out her fantasy to keep her distracted.
- When Preston Northwest tried to B.S. his way out of Weirdmageddon by selling out everyone else, he cathartically shuffles the functions of every hole in his face (minus his pie hole for obvious reasons) instead of letting him get off so easily, which the show rightfully plays as a beautiful act performed by a beautiful creature.
- During Weirdmageddon, he had several hammy and awesome lines.
- He effortlessly schools the Time Baby after he threatens to make the triangle endure his tantrum, which is no mean feat.
- While it doesn't justify anything he's done, he still has an understandable motivation, given that he grew sick of being stuck as a two-dimensional lifeform after hundreds of billions of years, with him sincerely believing Weirdmageddon can undo anything that might impede his long-awaited and hard-earned freedom.
- Furthermore, it's all but stated that Bill was treated as an outcast for his mutation which allowed to see the Third Dimension and sought to make the rest of his species see it only to destroy them all including the Second Dimension. It was also done accidentally and Bill initially felt remorse.
What Makes Him Detestable?[]
- The hugest thing preventing him from being a Magnificent Baddie is that he is incredibly sadistic and has committed a litany of "for the evulz" crimes, such as:
- Possessing Dipper and using the chance to abuse Dipper's body in a multitude of ways.
- Turning random civilians into statues and stacking them into a "frozen throne of human agony."
- Placing Wendy Corduroy, Gideon Gleeful, Old Man McGucket, Robbie Valentino, Soos Ramirez, and Pacifica Northwest in a state of conscious torment.
- Trying to kill one of the Pines twins while Stanford and Stanley watched "just for the heck of it."
- Ranting about how he has some children to be made into corpses.
- He has some moments of blatant indignity. He throws a temper tantrum in the first season with Soos even remarking, "So I guess he gets really mad when he gets mad." And for all of his intelligence, he is ultimately out-gambited by a real Magnificent Baddie, Stanley Pines, in a humiliating display where he has a pathetic defeat by suffering a huge villainous breakdown, begging for undeserved mercy, trying to kill Stan in an act of rage and instead being justly destroyed and condemned to the Theraprism where he can no longer cause any trouble. This is also made worse by the fact Bill has the ability to predict the future and he still got tricked regardless.
