Bowser is the main antagonist of Illumination's 13th full-length feature film The Super Mario Bros. Movie, an adaptation of Nintendo's Mario franchise.
He is the tyrannical king of the Koopas and ruler of the Darklands who desires to conquer the world using the powerful Super Star. With the assistance of his Koopa Army and loyal servant Kamek, Bowser plans to use the Super Star to target the Mushroom Kingdom and win Princess Peach's hand in marriage, with his plan bringing him into conflict with Mario after abducting his brother Luigi, while viewing the former as his rival to win as Peach's love and eventually becomes his arch-nemesis.
He is voiced by Jack Black.
His Qualities[]
What Makes Him Entertaining?[]
- Bowser's Peaches song resonates with fans, as this song dives deeper into the complexity of his lustful nature.
- He has many hammy comedic moments such as him practicing to propose for Peach and feeling embarrassed when Peach asked if he really thought he'd marry her.
- Him losing his sanity at the end and ranting out at Mario for "ruining everything" was nothing more than a badass and a "Evil is Cool" charm to him, considering how bad he beated up Donkey Kong and Mario for foiling his plots (as well as taunting Mario and even let out a awesome roar coming from the games).
- He is very charismatic, as he uses his torture of Toad to have Peach give into having to marry him.
- His performance by Jack Black has made Bowser as one of the successful Illumination villains.
What Makes Him Detestable?[]
- Unlike his original video game version, he has no redeeming qualities in the slightest.
- Despite having comedic moments, the other characters take him seriously most of the time, which allows Bowser to be abusive and merciless towards many people, even histroops such as slamming a part of the piano onto Kamek's fingers for example and make him cry in pain, or also tearing a piece of Luigi's moustache to force him into getting answers for where Mario is while Luigi screams in agony, all of which to fuel Bowser's enjoyment in the suffering of others.
- He is a coward who attacks mainly people who are defenseless or powerless against him, like his minions, the penguins, Toad, etc. but will panic once they have the upper hand and he cannot fight back.
- At the very end of the film, he even cowardly begs for mercy at Peach's hands whereas she knows he wants to retry to kill them again.
- He is a terrible boss to his minions. He called the Spinies "whatever those things are," constantly abuses his right-hand wizard, Kamek, burns a Koopa alive, makes it very clear he doesn’t want them to have Peach, doesn't mourn Koopa General's death and has them all charge straight to their deaths at the hands of Mario and Luigi instead of having them retreat.
- His love for Princess Peach is out of pure lust rather than genuine love and he consistently displays perverse behavior throughout the movie. Moreover, he tries to kill her as soon as she rejects him.
- He almost has Donkey Kong killed and brutally injures Mario without provocation during his villainous breakdown. And he also tried to strike Peach and Toad to death just because they defended Mario against him.
- Even before to meet Mario, he already hates him to death without any reason, only because he was taken in by Peach.
