Entertainingly Detestable Wiki

Bowyer is a major antagonist in the 1996 SNES video game Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and the 2023 remake.

He is a top-ranking lieutenant and enforcer for the Smithy Gang. Working under command of the titled leader and ruler Smithy himself, he was given the objective to retrieve and bring back the Green Star Piece.

His Qualities[]

What Makes Him Entertaining?[]

  • Even though they hardly detract from his depravity, he does show some comedic features in his behavior.
  • While he did not have much on-screen presence, he displays an "Evil is Cool" effect that nonetheless makes him memorable and noteworthy.
    • In the memories album the heroes carry in the 2023 remake, they even referred to him as "The Formidable Bowyer" remembering him as a challenge.
  • As an anthropomorphic robotic bow, he is of course incredibly talented at archery as his arrows did hit a fair portion of the Rose Town citizens. Even before Mario became aware of such, a fair number of people were already paralyzed by a direct hit.
  • His disputatious and bellicose outbursts are frequently portrayed as hammy and theatrical, making him an enjoyable antagonist.
  • He is a competent enforcer for Smithy and leader for his minions. His strategy of surrounding himself with minions also held him in a position where he could have stolen the Green Star if not for Geno. Mallow even said to Mario's agreement that taking on Bowyer and his minions without extra help would have been a terrible idea.

What Makes Him Detestable?[]

  • He is an extremely sadistic and cruel individual, gleefully showing enjoyment in terrorizing the citizens of Rose Town as a mere example.
  • He is unashamedly hostile and baleful in his behavior, and not limited to opponents, as he also chewed out an Aero minion just for interrupting his terrorism on Rose Town.
  • He cheaply resorted to locking the action command buttons when he realized the heroes had him outnumbered in battle.
