Christian "Chris" McLean is the main antagonist of the Canadian animated franchise Total Drama.
He is the sadistic and egotistical host of the titular reality show who designs excruciating and gruesome challenges for the contestants so he can entertain himself in watching them suffer.
He was voiced by Christian Potenza in the first five seasons and by Terry McGurrin from the sixth season onwards.
His Qualities[]
What Makes Him Entertaining?[]
- Christian Potenza and Terry McGurrin both did a decent job voicing him. The former's performance especially makes the character more memorable.
- He has lots of Laughably Evil moments throughout the series, even when he sheds his positive traits in the later seasons.
- In the first few seasons, while he still was an egomaniacal jerk, he rarely went too far in his actions and at times even showed some standards (even if they were low), like being disgusted with Heather reading Gwen's diary to all the contestants (and on international TV).
- He also had more moments of being kind, sociable and even caring towards the contestants.
- Even though he started to lose his humanity in World Tour, he still managed to remain a likable character for the most part (although he loses this quality too in the next season).
- In the 2023 reboot, he has significantly toned down as a villain and treats the cast better than the casts from the previous two generations.
What Makes Him Detestable?[]
- He continuously makes dangerous and life-threatening challenges for the campers to compete in.
- He enjoys watching conflicts between the contestants, such as bullying, cheating and fighting, and often encourages them.
- He's always willing to put the competitors in danger and cause them pain, suffering and misfortune, if it means to satisfy his sadistic tendencies and increase the ratings for his show.
- He favors and supports the actions of villainous characters, and allows unfair eliminations.
- From Seasons 3-5, he begins losing his redeeming qualities and gradually his cruel and psychopathic nature becomes more obvious than ever.
- He refused to save the contestants when Scarlett prepared to have the island explode and kill them, as long as he was safe in his helicopter.
- He treats his interns extremely cruelly. For example, in Revenge of the Island he made Dakota an intern and exposed her to toxic chemicals, causing her to be mutated, and in All-Stars he didn't feed his interns for a week. He even causes the deaths of several interns through neglect without remorse.
