Do. You. Think. You've. Won? Well?! Do you, Mia Fey? Heh. Heh. Heh. Heheh... That's. Just. Fine!
~ Dahlia revealing her true colors.

Dahlia Hawthorne is one of two main antagonists (alongside Godot) of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations, the third game in the Ace Attorney series. While seeming sweet on the surface, in truth, she's a deranged monster, willing to kill anyone and anything in order to have control.

Her Qualities[]

What Makes Her Entertaining?[]

  • She's one of the most intelligent culprits in the series, easily manipulating people, either by attraction or by feigned naivety.
  • Her theme, "Distant Traces of Beauty", is well loved due to how it both gives a serene impression, and yet becomes more ominous as the game progresses, which, when it plays by Case 5, only causes one feeling: dread.
  • Unlike a lot of other villains in the series, her motives are fairly grounded. She tries to spite her father for leaving her, and then the rest of her crimes are a series of her trying to cover her tracks for it. Unlike a lot of them, too, she isn't in some sort of a position of power, making her not seem unbeatable.
  • While most villains just use their pre-existing power to avoid justice, Dahlia manages to do it through the sheer talent of her manipulation, showing just how incredibly intelligent she is.
  • Although some of her plans are faulty, like jumping off Dusky Bridge, it's mainly due to improvisation, as she expected Iris's presence, and when she didn't arrive, she does the one possible method she has of keeping the two million to herself, jumping off the bridge. This shows how she is far more ruthless than most of the other culprits in the series.
  • She seems to just be a minor first case killer initially, but subverts it, having a far greater role in the game's story, even postmortem.
  • Her final breakdown is incredibly satisfying, as Mia says that, even though they can't punish her as a ghost, she already has been punished by being born as Dahlia Hawthorne. This leads into the most elaborate 2D breakdown in the series, similar to the insanity of those of Spirit of Justice.

What Makes Her Detestable?[]

  • She kills or tries to kill many completely innocent people, such as Diego Armando, Phoenix Wright, and Doug Swallow, who either never wronged her or wronged her in inconsequential ways.
  • She manipulates Terry Fawles, a man with a mental disorder, into falling for her due to his intellectual disabilities. She then convinced him to kill himself if he ever lost trust in her, ensuring he'd either be completely loyal or out of the way.
  • Murdered Valerie Hawthorne, her own stepsister, for knowing too much about the diamond theft.
  • Helped her mother, Morgan Fey, try to kill Maya, out of sheer spite towards Mia. To do this, she planned to possess Pearl Fey, her own little sister, and possibly even cause her death, even though she was only a child.
  • When she ended up channelled by Misty instead, she tried to kill Maya anyways, only being stopped by Diego Armando killing Misty. She then wrote Maya's name in Misty's blood to pin it on her.
  • She trapped her own twin sister in a cave and impersonated her whilst being channelled by Maya, whom she believed was Pearl.
  • She made Phoenix believe Maya killed herself by jumping off the bridge, causing him to have a mental breakdown. If he didn't figure out whose body Dahlia was in, he would've forever believed Maya had committed suicide.
