David is the secondary antagonist of the 2013 video game The Last of Us and its HBO adaptation. He is the leader of a group of cannibals who happened to encounter Joel Miller and Ellie Williams during their journey to the Fireflies. When David finds out Joel killed several of his henchmen, he decides to kidnapp Ellie in order to keep her for himself.

He was voiced by Nolan North in the game, and portrayed by Scott Shepherd in the show.

His Qualities

What Makes Him Entertaining?

• No matter how despisable he is, he still has a cool and intimidating presence, and Nolan North's performance makes it even better.
• He's shown to be smart, as he managed to find out Ellie was the little girl travelling with Joel all along, and found her home by tracking her footsteps, successfully kidnapping her.
• He has an interresting philosophy of him believing in fate and that "everything happens for a reason", quote he uses when he shows his true colors to Ellie.
• After locking up Ellie, he tried to manipulate her so that he could keep her for himself, and almost succeeded. He was also doubting her to be Infected when she showed her bite to him and James to escape them.
• He has a creepy and frightening boss fight, where Ellie no longer has weapons and has to sneak up on David and stab him without being caught while he chases her around.
• He is by far the most memorable antagonist in The Last of Us, and is also considered to be the creepiest human character in the series because of his cruelty and lack of humanity.

What Makes Him Detestable?

• He is a cannibal and a serial-killer, who, along with his group, kidnapped, tortured, and murdered many survivors, eating them in the process.
• He's a pedophile who attempts to rape and kill Ellie after kidnapping her, which ultimately traumatized her and left her with PTSD. However it's only implied.
