~ Dio after forcefully kissing Erina, and one of his most famous quotes. |
Dio Brando, later known as DIO, is the main antagonist of the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure manga and anime series.
He is a megalomaniacal vampire who is the most notable enemy of the Joestar family, and the arch-nemesis of Jonathan Joestar, as well as his great-great-grandson Jotaro Kujo.
In the anime, he was voiced by Takehito Koyasu in Japanese and Patrick Seitz in English.
His Qualities[]
What Makes Him Entertaining?[]
- Dio is one of the series’ most iconic characters, being the main villain of two parts, and having his presence (indirectly and directly) stretched toward all six parts of the series. He was even brought back in the alternate universe, and the protagonist of the ninth part, Jodio Joestar, has part of his name as homage to him.
- In fact, Hirohiko Araki himself considers Dio to be the true protagonist of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure for how influential he is to the story.
- He keeps a laughably evil presence in all his direct appearances.
- His stand, The World, is arguably one of the most iconic stands in the show, and its ability to stop time and “MUDA” battlecry is equally as iconic. So does the “WRYYYYYY” noise he makes as a vampire.
- His design is very cool, and is even considered attractive by some people.
- As laughable as he is, Dio also has an intimidating presence as well whenever on screen.
- He has a tragic backstory of growing up in the slums of London and being abused by his father who drove his mother to death, which makes him somewhat sympathetic, despite the fact this tragedy cannot justify his actions.
- Related to this, Dio killed his father initially out of what he did to his mother showing that once cared for her at some point before shedding it entirely.
- Tons of his words and moments make up different memes across the internet, such as:
- It was I, Dio!/Kono Dio da!
- I RENOUNCE MY HUMANITY, JOJO!
- How Feeble/Hinjaku Hinjaku
- THE WORLD!/ZA WARUDO!
- Time stop!/Toki yo Tomare!
- USELESS! USELESS! USELESS!/MUDA! MUDA! MUDA!
- Oh, you’re approaching me?
- Road Roller Da!
- WRYYYYYYYY!
- Overall, despite being too vile to count as a Magnificent Baddie, he is highly well-received across the fandom, which protects him from being a Hate Sink.
What Makes Him Detestable?[]
- Ultimately, Dio is (for obvious reasons) the most heinous villain in the JoJo franchise (at least in the original universe), as the other villains (even the Bigger Bads Kars and Diavolo) were either unleashed by his influence or failed to out-evil him.
- He is very sadistic and cruel, and some of his Moral Event Horizons are really horrifying, such as zombifying a woman then let her eat her infant child, and forcing Wilson Philips to drive over a sidewalk full of pedestrians.
- To say that Dio has “Kick the Dog” moments is not enough, as he literally fulfills the words of it by kicking Danny upon meeting him and then later putting him in an incinerator.
- He ordered Steely Dan had Enya the Hag, one of his most loyal minions, killed for knowing too much despite she would most certainly not betray him.
- He is ultimately at his worst in the very first episode, where the whole episode is just him attempting to ruin Jonathan’s life.
- Even after Dio's father, Dario, had died and deserved it for the abuse he gave to his own son, Dio became a much worse person throughout and openly chooses to be evil rather than to turn his life around for the better. Not to mention that Dio was already a bad person to begin with, even if Dario wouldn't have abused his own son.
