“ | I hate that hedgehog! | „ |
~ Robotnik's catchphrase. |
“ | Snooping as usual, I see? | „ |
~ Robotnik's most famous quote that would become the "PINGAS" meme. |
Dr. Ivo Robotnik, better known as Dr. Robotnik, is the main antagonist of the DIC cartoon Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, serving as the titular hedgehog's arch-nemesis. He is an egomaniacal absolutist who constantly schemes to conquer all of Mobius, but is always stopped by Sonic no matter how close to victory he comes, and will usually declare his infernal hatred towards that rodent-like creature after his defeats.
He was voiced by the late British singer Long John Baldry.
His Qualities[]
What Makes Him Entertaining?[]
- He has unique animation that helps increase his ability to stand out amongst the already wacky cast of the Looney Tunes-esque cartoon and helped to increase his memability. Many of his constantly changing facial expressions and body movements have become memes, not to mention the salute he does in his military dictator uniform in the episode "Lovesick Sonic."
- His unique insults he throws at anyone such as Sonic, his cousin Warpnik and also his underlings.
- He has extreme durability where he can survive even the most absurd of slapstick, including ones that should have killed him such as the time the edge of a cage fell onto his neck.
- Long John Baldry's legendary performance, giving him an extremely distinctive and easy to recognize voice which is one of the reasons he is a meme.
- He genuine cares for his mother despite her constant abuse of him. In addition, he showed genuine care for his dead pet cockroach Mr. Bobo, and he has multiple moments where he is played for sympathy.
What Makes Him Detestable?[]
- He is an excessive egomaniac, as he has a giant golden statue outside of his fortress to display his grandiose delusions of grandeur, and in the episode "High Stakes Sonic," he forced gambler sheep into slave labor to build a large sphinx with his face on it.
- He is extremely petty and childish, as he is willing to imprison people over the most pathetic of reasons and in the episode "Sonic the Matchmaker," he builds a robotic wife called Omletta, and when they go on their honeymoon in Robotnik Falls, he briefly causes a drought in order to cause a famine to gift himself with starving Mobian suffering.
- He is dishonorable, such as in the episode "Robolympics," where he makes a promise to Sonic that if he won the most gold medals, then he would stop the asteroid from going towards Turtle Town, but cheated throughout the Robolympics to stop Sonic from winning, and when he did win, he broke his promise by letting the asteroid continue its course towards Turtle Town and attempted grinding Sonic up.
- He constantly abuses Scratch and Grounder and his other robotic minions, berating them for whenever they fail or to project his own frustrations with his incompetence onto them.
- He especially has a personal disdain towards Coconuts, even when the latter proved himself to be much more competent than Scratch and Grounder. One time, he even successfully told Robotnik about the Dream-A-Ma-Jig in the episode Boogey Mania, but instead of promoting him, scorns him over not bringing the machine to him, then demoting him to Scrub Monkey Third Class, despite the usefulness of knowing about the machine.
- He has almost succeeded in conquering Mobius several times, most notably in the episode "Lifestyles of the Sick and Twisted," where he successfully captures Sonic and Tails, tying them in chains over a pit of lava, but instead of letting them fall in it, he boasts and gloats on live television about how he captured Sonic and put him in his dungeon, leading to his humiliating defeat on live television after Sonic tricks Scratch and Grounder into unwittingly freeing him by proxy.
Trivia[]
- This Robotnik is heavily featured in the parodies known as YouTube Poop due to his unforgettable presence, comically exaggerated facial movements, and unique ways of speaking (such as long-rolling Rs), being especially known for saying the word Pingas (which is a meme), which itself is also heavily featured in those YTP videos.
- Dr. Robotnik says Pingas in the episode Boogey Mania, where it is actually a misheard word in the line "Snooping as usual, I see!", where it sounds like he said Pingas because Long John Baldry put an emphasis on the words ping and as when saying that line.
- Two more incarnations of Dr. Robotnik say this line, the first one being when Pre-Super Genesis Wave Eggman said the line to Snively (without the I see part) in Archie Sonic the Hedgehog Issue 205, the second one being when Sonic Boom Eggman says the line to the captured Sonic, Amy, and Tails in the episode Return of the Buddy Buddy Temple of Doom.
- The modern Dr. Eggman voice actor, Mike Pollock, purposefully de-emphasized the words ping and as, being aware of the rampantly spread pingas meme that forever changed the landscape of the YouTube Poop community.

- This Robotnik having two incompetent dimwitted servants became the basis for some future incarnations of Dr. Robotnik's henchmen, as Sega wanted to capitalize on the immense success and popularity of this Robotnik and Scratch and Grounder.
- This Robotnik does, albeit rarely, roboticize citizens like what his SatAM counterpart is known for, but rather than using a complex machine for it like him and the later based off of him Sonic Underground Robotnik, he uses a simple device known as the Robot-Transmogrifier Ray, which he used to Roboticize Blackbeard the Pirate, a whale, a T-Rex, a Pterodactyl, and some other beings. The term Roboticization, however, is never used in AoStH, and it plays an extremely minor role compared to several of his other counterparts, especially including SatAM Robotnik.
- In the game based off of the show called Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, instead of using the Robot-Transmogrifier Ray, he uses the Mean-Bean Steaming Machine, where the residents of Beanville get put onto a conveyor belt to be roboticized to serve him in ending music and fun forever on Mobius.
