Philip Wittebane, better known as Emperor Belos is the main antagonist of the Disney cartoon series The Owl House.
His Qualities[]
What Makes Him Entertaining?[]
- The performances of his actors Matthew Rhys and Alex Lawther made him scary and sinister.
- He's mysterious and charismatic most of the first and second seasons.
- While it doesn't excuse his actions, he was an orphan who along with his brother Caleb that thier parents somehow died for unknown reasons was raised by humans that hated witches and their wild magic and when they grew up, they were witch hunters which had made Philip into the monster who he is today.
- He still has several humanizing moments, such as reminiscing about the Human Realm to Hunter, which underscores the deeply human nature of his evil.
- Although he did kill his brother, its still heavily implied that he may still have cared for him at one point as he is making clones of him to remind him.
- His goop form was pretty cool.
- He shows that he doesn't give up and keeps moving as shown that he was going to the titan even when he isn't himself.
- Him ignoring Odalia was played for laughs and complete satisfaction since Odalia was a terrible person, abused her family and was willing to help him with his genocide on witchkind to rule as a lesser royalty.
- His dragon and his mass forms were really cool to look at.
- His possessed Titan form looks amazing and made fans make sans memes out of it.
- He's easily one of the most darkest villains of all the Disney network.
- He is very intelligent and manipulative as he was able to manipulate thousands of witches and demons to become the emperor, manipulated Kikimora, Hunter, Lilith and the Coven Heads into following him, manipulated Luz into helping him find The Collector and manipulated The Collector into telling him about the Draining Spell so he could use it to wipe out witchkind.
- Overall, he’s a good well-written with a compelling backstory and an evil character to have fun with during the seasons.
What Makes Him Detestable?[]
- He's an overall a hypocritical narcissist who is shown to less to other then himself. Not only did he become the very thing he was fighting against but had hurt so many people in the story. On top of that, Belos is aware of it yet refuses to change.
- He killed his brother out of spite for just falling in love with a witch named Evelyn.
- He killed many witches before the series even begins.
- He killed the clones of Caleb that he created just because they were (or at least, he saw them as) traitors.
- He’s abusive to Hunter (and likely was this to some of his predecessors as well), gaslighting him into believing that wild witches killed his family and being distant and cold towards him when he doesn’t need to manipulate him.
- When she arrived to him, he tries to trick Lilith to kill her sister saying that he will "free" her curse.
- Tries to petrify Luz when she wasn't giving him what he wanted.
- As revealed, he was neglecting Hunter because of wild magic.
- He betrays everyone that he ever met Luz, the Collector, Hunter, Kikimora, and many more.
- His worst actions that caused him to be hated was by indirectly killing Flapjack as he was fatally wounded by him and then sacrificed himself to save Hunter.
- He possessed Raine in their puppet form and manipulated the Collector into thinking that his best friend King had betrayed him.
- Mocks Raine that they didn't try to stop him then possesses the Titan's corpse.
- Rejects the Collector's kindness and tries to kill him when Luz blocked it, (temporarily) killing her in the process.
- When he was ripped out of the Titan, he tries to manipulate Luz into sparing him by lying one last time before getting melted in the boiling rain and being crushed by Eda, King and Raine, killing him once and for all with a side of a fitting and satisfying punishment.
