Going by how the Entertainingly Detestable criteria is meant to be, there are certain categories that cannot be applied for these characters, the examples are.
- Magnificent Baddies: Their actions make them too dislikeable of a baddie that outweighs their magnificence, regardless of them having their qualities.
- Hate Sinks: While Entertainingly Detestables can be hated like them, they still have enjoyment factors such as how they are entertaining, and Hate Sinks are commonly not enjoyable meaning they severely lack this aspect about them.
- Lacking in both areas: If they are not enjoyable and hated enough to watch, then they can't be on here.
- Love Exalted: Although ED characters can be liked, they are not people to look up to as something morally beneficial, as they are hated for the negativity they have caused.
The Examples
Magnificent Baddies
- Baron Zemo (Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes): Despite being a Pure Evil villain who used chemical weapons during WWII, has a sadistic rivalry with Captain America, and was willing to sacrifice the universe to save himself, he ultimately isn’t too detestable for MB. The chemical weapons are downplayed by cartoon standards with the effects not being overtly graphic and only intended to use them towards enemy soldiers with no one getting hurt except for himself, he has a degree of superficial respect towards Captain America despite his sadism, and sacrificing the universe wasn't done out of cowardness but out of self-defense from a brutal death, and is shown to having zero fear fighting the Avengers. And while does have a god complex since he tells Thor to kneel, this is understandable since he just beat an Asgardian god and never goes to far with it to the point where he is a smug snake.
- Dabi (My Hero Academia): Despite having a lot of nasty crimes like burning innocent people alive and trying to kill his family, they are done for the purposes of getting revenge on his abusive father, preventing his crimes from being too detestable. And while the abuse Endeavor put him through messed him up badly to the point of having a breakdown, he ends up recovering from that, shows genuine remorse for his crimes, reconnects with brother Shoto, and there is a lot of emphasis put on how he succeeded with his revenge towards Endeavor, preventing him from being too broken.
- Dr. Octopus (Raimiverse): Not hated enough.
- Makima: Despite her heinousness, she is a MB and her crimes are all pragmatic enough to not detract from her magnificence.
- Jafar (Disney): Although he starts off as a smug snake in the first movie where he lets his ego get the better of him, he bounces back and drops his smug snake attitude in the sequel and recovers from any mishaps there.. His lust for Jasmine isn’t preventing for MB since it’s downplayed by the G-rated tones of the film, lacks any rapist undertones, nothing suggests Jasmine was a minor at the time, and he drops his lust for her in the sequel.
Hate Sinks
- Alan Yates: Doesn't even have an entertaining aesthetic about him.
- Patrick Bateman: Whatever entertaining qualities he may have don't change the fact that he was written to be loathed.
Lacking in Both Areas
- Kaguya Otsutsuki: Lacks enjoyable aesthetic but was not meant to be hated.
- Manny Heffley: He was not intended to be as despised by the fanbase as he is, and said fanbase finds little entertaning in him.
- Sebulba: Not so enjoyable but not quite so despicable either.
Love Exalted
- Barney the Dinosaur: Is considered to be the ultimate loved by children's mascot character.
