Esther Coleman, real name Leena Klammer, is the main antagonist of the 2009 psychological horror film Orphan as well as the main protagonist of it's 2022 prequel, Orphan: First Kill. A 33 year-old Estonian woman, she uses her hypopituitary disorder to trick families into thinking she's a 9 year-old Russian orphan so she could be adopted before murdering the families in her attempts to seduce the patriarchs of the families.

Esther was played by Isabelle Fuhrmann.

Her Qualities[]

What Makes Her Entertaining?[]

  • Isabelle Fuhrmann's performance makes Esther come across as a very cunning and skilled manipulator.
  • Because most of the characters she targets, including Tricia and Gunnar Albright (who covered up the death of the real Esther and harbor racism towards East Europeans), and John Coleman (who willingly believes that Esther is innocent when his wife Kate warns that Esther is trying to ruin her life), are horrible people, it becomes very easy to root for Esther.

What Makes Her Detestable?[]

  • Murders Tricia and Gunnar Albright and attempts to murder the Coleman family for no other reason than her lust for the patriarchs of the households.
  • In her attempt to ruin Kate Coleman's life, she almost gets Max Coleman, her adopted sister (who is both a child and deaf) killed by switching the car into reverse. Esther's willingness to hurt a child comes up again when she attempts to kill Max after murdering John for refusing to reciprocate her feelings.
  • Attempts to kill Max's brother Daniel Coleman (also a child), first by burning down his treehouse while he's still inside and then by torturing him by smothering him with a pillow.
