Eustace Bagge is the tritagonist in the television show Courage the Cowardly Dog. He is an elderly man who is the husband to Muriel Bagge and one of Courage's owners. He is usually shown to be grumpy and hostile to nearly anyone around him and has a particular hatred for Courage whom he likes to scare and mistreat.
He was voiced by Howard Hoffman, Lionel Wilson, Arthur Anderson, and Wallace Shawn.
His Qualities[]
What Makes Him Entertaining?[]
- He acts childish for his age which adds a bit of levity and humor to the seriousness of the show.
- He can act dramatically when he is annoyed. For instance, he would yell, "Look what you made me do!" when he is upset such as when he yelled that at Katz while attacking him when Eustace accidentally destroyed his chair.
- He sits in his chair for nearly the entire episode and acts grumpy by saying "I'm not getting out of this chair". His stubbornness to not get out of the chair continues even when he is on a cruise that is hit by a tidal wave.
- He sings with a mutated eel in a river moat after he dramatically attempts to cut down a tree before the eel attacks him.
- He shown to be horrified and angered by Cruel Veterinarian's plans of firing dogs into space despite being abusive to Courage.
- He has very tragic past. His own Mother abused him many times and loved his older brother more (who also bullied Eustace for fun). To add more to tragedy, his infamous "STUPID DOG!" which he use to abuse Courage is caused by his Mother, who many times yelled at him "STUPID SON!"
What Makes Him Detestable?[]
- Eustace is shown to be hostile to nearly anyone around him. Unlike his wife, Muriel, he would have an aggressive or rude attitude with strangers and most people in general.
- Eustace constantly mocked, belittled, and insulted Courage. He would constantly call him a "stupid dog" and would put on a mask to scare him for his own amusement.
- He is never grateful or appreciative for Courage who would save his life from multiple dangerous situations. Even after being saved, he would resort to having a hostile attitude with Courage.
- He often acts childish and does not take responsibility for his actions. After Muriel hits him for his bad attitude towards Courage, he would ask "what did I do?".
- When Courage got more attention from Muriel, Eustace masterminded a plan with multiple villains to have him killed out of spite.
- He is shown to not treat Muriel well and would often boss her around with a list of household chores to do while he sits in a chair reading the newspaper.
- He harassed the Hunchback when he visited his residence by calling him ugly and making fun of him.
- When Muriel was a Weremole he tries to kill her while not resizing it’s his own wife that he’s attacking and would have killed her if Courage haven’t cured her
- Despite having no issues with insulting others like the Hunchback, Eustace would not take insults lightly and would get very angry when he was the one who would get insulted.
- He is shown to be greedy and would be happy when he got money or material possessions.
