When you notice an insect on the ground, do you stop to consider it a fool? The life of an insect is so beneath you that it would be a waste of your time to even consider judging it. That would be an accurate summation on my feelings towards you humans.
~ Father's famous speech.

Father, originally known as Homunculus or The Dwarf in the Flask, is the main antagonist of the manga series Fullmetal Alchemist and it's 2009 anime adaption Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

He is a homunculus created several hundred years ago who sought to obtain freedom outside the flask he was born in, created by Van Hohenheim, the father of the series' protagonists, Edward and Alphonse Elric. Father manipulating the country of Amestris into starting wars all in order to create a nationwide transmutation circle and obtain the power of "God".

He was voiced by the late Iemasa Kayumi in the Japanese version, and by Kent Williams in the English dubbed version.

His Qualities[]

What Makes Him Entertaining?[]

  • He was a master manipulator who, as a small defenseless creature locked in the flask, managed to manipulate the young Van Hoheneim (then known as "Number 23") by giving him a name and teaching him alchemy, reading, writing and mathematics, and later the king of the land of Xerxes, in order to he committed genocide in several villages in order to activate the great alchemical transumatic circle, promising him immortality (in fact, planning everything in such a way as to obtain it himself).
  • He is the Big Bad of the entire story, responsible for the rise of Amestris from the shadows and for all the evil events that took place there, most notably every war that Amestris fought with neighboring countries, in order to obtain as many souls as possible from the killed victims and create stones philosophical.
  • He is one of the most powerful characters in the entire universe, as his alchemical abilities surpass virtually every character in the universe (with the exception of his equal Van Hohenheim). He is able to use alchemy, ignoring all restrictions and equivalent exchange, without performing any transmutation circle or even hand gestures, and has a vast knowledge of all possible concepts.
  • In the manga, when Van Hohenheim was first introduced and before the Father was shown in his full glory, the whole thing was played in such a way that it was not entirely clear whether Hohenheim and the Father were two different characters or one and the same person, which made the latter the more interesting character.
  • When the Elric brothers first met Father, the latter had his own brief comedic moment when he grabbed Edward by the face and laughingly stated that he didn't expect Van Hohenheim to have children.
  • When he succeeded in implementing his plan, through wars and countless sacrifices, he managed to consume the Truth itself and become a full-fledged god, able to create a miniature version of the sun and deactivate the alchemy of other characters until Van Hohenheim put it into action. his plan and didn't reverse it.

What Makes Him Detestable?[]

  • Father has the absolute highest body count of any villain in the Fullmetal Alchemist series, numbering in the millions, due to the vast amount of wars he has fought and genocides carried out to further his plan to become a god.
  • He despised people and considered them completely insignificant, saying, in reference to the Ling Yao he met, that when he saw a worm crawling on the ground he did not even bother to consider him "stupid", because the difference between them was so great that it made him I just don't care. In this regard, he subverted his friendship with Hohenheim after the latter tries to stop him.
  • He repeatedly showed that he had absolutely no care for his "children", not caring in the slightest that they died, which was best seen during the final fight, where it was clear that his original child - Pride was seriously injured and he could heal him without any problems in his new godlike form, but ultimately he simply ignores it, dooming Pride to defeat at Edward's hands.
  • When he was defeated and stood before the Gate of Truth, he began to beg the Truth to show mercy, despite the countless terrible deeds he had committed, he tried desperately and selfishly to justify his actions, claiming that he was chasing a thirst for knowledge and wanted to become better, but the Truth subtly pointed him out that during all this time he has not gained any knowledge and has not changed in any way, and his acquisition of divine powers does not make him a god at all, but only a perfidious thief.
