“ | Your soul will be so sweet. | „ |
~ Gabriel's catchphrase. |
Commander Gabriel Miller, also known as Subtilizer in Gun Gale Online, and Dark Emperor Vecta in the Underworld, is one of two main antagonists (alongside Vassago Casals) of the War of Underworld sub-arc of light novel series Sword Art Online.
He's the commander of the American company Glowgen Defence Systems, sent to obtain the Soul Translator technology developed by R.A.T.H. on the Ocean Turtle. Upon logging into the Project: A.L.I.C.E., Gabrile would log in the project's simulation, the Underworld, to sieze the Fluctlight Alice Zuberg for his plans of remaking the UW into a harvest plant for human souls.
His Qualities[]
What Makes Him Entertaining?[]
- Both his voice actors, Akira Ishida and Greg Chun, do a great at portraying Gabriel cold sophisticated foe, capable of revealing his true sociopathic in an instant, on top of being shrouded in menancing aura. It also helps that both Akira and Greg has voiced a couple of equally despicable and cool villains like Akaza, Garou and Muzan.
- Despite his lack of interractions with the protagonists, he's no way a push-over when it comes in fight, not to mention his terrifying display of powers and obsession with harvesting souls make him one of the most intimidating antagonists in series.
- Managed to win both the 1st and 4th Bullets of Bullets tournmant in Gun Gale Online. It's made more impressive because the 1st was won with nothing but a handgun and a knife, and 4th was won without bringing any arsenal of his own, in particular managing to catch Sinon, one of the best GGO players, off guard and slowly strangle her to death.
- The anime gives him a nightmarishly cool leitmotif called Death Angel, which perfectly illustrates his nightmarish personality and the intimidating role he has.
- His fight scenes against Bercouli, and later, against Kirito, are amongst the best-animated fighting scenes in the series, due to the sheer amount of power he displays while fightining them. In particular, he manages to kill Bercouli despite ultimately being killed himself, while in his fight against Kirito, he assumes a cool-looking angelic form.
What Makes Him Despicable?[]
- He has a creepy, if not borderline sadistic obsession with harvesting people's souls ever since he was shown a video of a praying mantis' mate being still alive after its head was eaten by the female. This led to him starting to kill animals as a form of "experimentation", before eventually moving on to the humans.
- In fact, while fellow ED villains in Vassago/PoH, Shouichi/XaXa/Death Gun and Quinella have some sort of backstory to give some depth in characterization (with Vassago and Shouichi having to deal with abusive parents, and Quinella starting out with good intentions until she lost herself in power), Gabriel's backstory instead serves to make him more monstrous by murdering his own childhood friend and fiancee when he was 12 years old.
- In his fight against Sinon in BoB tournament, he slowly strangled her to death, while sadistically telling her how her soul will be delecious, an event that severely traumatized her as seen in the anime adaptation. When they end re-encountering each in UW, Gabriel tried to suck out her soul out of lustful sadism.
- When one of the Dark Territory soldiers tried to rightously assassinate him after being off-put by him, he sadistically devoured her soul and showed off her body to his Dark Territory forces as a warning to everyone, even going extra mile to taunt said soldier's lover about her death before killing him too. In fact, he was such a cruel leader, that some of his forces end up defecting to the Human Empire.
- While he is genuinely strong, said strength also causes him to heavily understimate his opponents, leading to his death in UW twice, with a second death causing his death in real-life. Once he realizes he died for real upon seeing his own corpse, he spends his final moments hysterically begging for mercy he doesn't deserve and screaming in despair as his soul gets dragged off to hell.
