Gaston LeGume is the main antagonist of Beauty and the Beast. He was an arrogant and egotistical hunter who will stop at nothing to make Belle his trophy wife.
He was voiced by Richard White.
His Qualities[]
What Makes Him Entertaining?[]
- Richard White's performance is great regarding the character's charisma that he carries throughout the movie.
- He is shown to be fairly intelligent as he came up with a well executed plan to get Belle to marry him by conspiring with Monsieur D'Arque to lock up Maurice unless Belle agrees to marry Gaston.
- While he does subvert them in the climax, he had some comedic moments such as showing his chest hair, him singing with LeFou.
- Additionally, his interactions with LeFou are funny and him getting rejected is kind of comedic, as Belle opens the door which caused Gaston to fall in the pond, much to his humiliation.
- He has some Evil is Cool moments such as being manipulative, his epic quotes like "Belle is mine!", and his evil laugh.
- He's one of several villains to have two different songs, the first being "Gaston" and the second being "Mob Song".
What Makes Him Detestable?[]
- He's a perverted jerk since he harassed Belle and when he knew she was in love with someone else, he still wanted her.
- He abuses his henchmen LeFou regularly most notably when he left him in the snow for quite some time.
- He's utterly selfish as he was willing to have Belle's father locked up in the insane asylum if she didn't marry him.
- He sang a song about killing the Beast and although the song is catchy, it still symbolizes how far he's willing to go just to have Belle.
- When the Beast let him go, Gaston immediately rejected redemption and he literally backstabbed the Beast and him falling to his death is well deserved.
- He is a hypocrite as he scolded Lefou for making fun of Maurice, even though he still makes fun of Maurice.
