| “ | Jedi scum! | „ |
| ~ One of General Grievous' most famous quotes. |
| “ | Army or not, you must realize… you are doomed! | „ |
| ~ Grievous to Obi Wan Kenobi before they fight. |
General Grievous is a major antagonist in the Star Wars franchise.
He is a Kaleesh warlord who, after his gruesome reconstruction into a 4 armed cyborg, serves as the supreme commander of the Separatist's Droid Army, the main archenemy of Obi-Wan Kenobi throughout the Clone Wars, and one of the galaxy's single greatest Jedi killers, having a burning hatred of the entire order which fuels his resolve to end their existence in the most brutal and violent manners as he hopes to achieve. He is an apprentice of Count Dooku and subordinate of Darth Sidious.
He was played by Matthew Wood.
His Qualities[]
What Makes Him Entertaining?[]
- Matthew Wood puts on a good performance for him in both Revenge of the Sith and The Clone Wars.
- The design of Grievous, especially his mask, hunched disposition, and iconic cape, has become an iconic piece of iconography within the franchise.
- He has a few comedic moments, such as his cough and some of the times he is annoyed at the idiocy of his Battle Droids, while still retaining an intimidating presence.
- Some of his lines like "General Kenobi", "Just as Count Dooku predicted" and "You fool! I've been trained in your Jedi arts by Count Dooku" are memetic.
- He has some great fighting skills and can kill Jedi. There are also times when he isn't cowardly, such as when he fights well against the Nightsisters and when he still nearly killed Obi-Wan Kenobi in his last moments when he's out of lightsabers and a means of escape.
- The extended fight in Tales of the Empire, where Grevious fights Selena is considered cool because he doesn't take off his cape or act like a coward Clone Wars often show him as.
- He at least leads his armies on the front lines whenever the situation calls for it.
- In a deleted scene of the Clone Wars he defeated Obi-Wan Kenobi.
- He can be pragmatic at times, such as when he values his pet monster Gor's skills in killing off intruders and was pissed when the Jedi killed him (though not out of any altruism since he gets over Gor's death pretty quickly) and escaped the trap.
What Makes Him Destestable?[]
- He lacks the sympathetic qualities of his Legends counterpart and any redeeming qualities are either pragmatic and/or subverted by the end.
- Plus his Legends counterpart has him as knowing Dooku lied to him while he never betrays Dooku, he shows great disdain for him on a few occasions and he's only in this war for the opportunity to kill Jedi rather than any care for Dooku's politics.
- He has several Kick the Dog Moments:
- Grievous decides to attack medical frigates as a prelude to attacking the whole medical outpost.
- After killing Selena, Morgan Elsbeth's mother, and cruelly mocks her last words to run and sending his droid army to kill her and slaughter the remaining Nightsisters.
- He broadcasts a hologram of Eeth Koth being brutally tortured by one of his Magna Guards to the Jed Temple, an action so vile and unspeakably cruel that Ahsoka had to hide the faces of two younglings who barely witnessed the act.
- He has frequently abused and destroyed countless battle droids in his anger or annoyance of their incompetence.
- He brutally crushed a clone trooper's neck right in front of Obi Wan, Cody, and other 212th Attack Battalion troopers to demoralise them, which angered Kenobi and made him let Grievous know he'd regret such a vile and brutal act.
- He not only killed many Jedi, not even sparing younglings, but he tortured some of them such as Eeth Koth for no reason other than to make them suffer emotionlessly. He also did not care how many innocents were subjugated and destroyed so long as he achieved his goals.
- He has a few humiliating moments like being bested and captured by Gungans of all people (though to be fair, most Gungans are not like Jar Jar and are great warriors. Plus Grievous did underestimated them).
- His sadistic tendencies can been shown through his sheer enjoyment in inspiring fear into his enemies, such as taunting them for their supposed weakness, relishing in the suffering of his victims and brutalising them in various cruel methods.
Trivia[]
- Grievous is one of two villains from the Prequel Trilogy to be Entertainingly Detestable, alongside Count Dooku.
- He and Dooku are also the only foreshadowing figures of Darth Vader's future to be Entertainingly Detestable due to Darth Maul being far too openly tragic compared to them.
