John Gillman, better known as The Homelander, or simply Homelander, is the main antagonist of The Boys live-action series adapted from the comics. He is the superhero leader of The Seven and son of Soldier Boy.
He is portrayed by Anthony Starr.
His Qualities[]
What Makes Him Entertaining?[]
- Anthony Starr perfectly portrays his narcissistic personality.
- While he is without a single shadow of a doubt detestable for most of his actions, his unpredictability is what makes him so astonishing, as many who have watched the Boys can never fully tell when he is going to pull a violent brutality or not, as he always switches between a faux affable façade and a sadistic psychopath, leading one to never know when he might snap, placing the audience on the edge of their seats within his presence.
- He has a good amount of powerful abilities that make him have a god like presence to everyone around him.
- He has multiple that are funny to the audience with his man childish behaviour.
- While not excusing his actions, he is often played with sympathy due to his mental breakdowns endured from trauma of being raised in a lab without his family. He is played sympathetically as he often tries to find a mother figure and tries to bond with his father Soldier Boy, despite being enemies.
- He cares for his son and tries to be a good father to him in his own way.
- He is a legitimate threat who is has been near unstoppable throughout most of the series.
What Makes Him Detestable?[]
- To call him egotistical and arrogant would be an understatement, even more so than Soldier Boy. He views himself as a literal god and believes the only man in the sky people should be worshipping is him. He will kill anybody with absolutely zero hesitation for not liking him and even thought of killing a crowd of civilians for calling him out. He makes it clear that people liking him is the only thing stopping him from being a public mass murderer.
- Despite his immense powers, he has no actual skill or battle prowess and only knows how to solve problems with them, even basic criminals, which often results in extra damage like causing a plane to malfunction or killing an African civilian.
- He is incompetents and cowardly when faced with an actual threat as he quickly cowers away when faced with Soldier Boy, showing he is only scary towards those weaker than him.
- He raped Billy's wife, Becca, leading to Billy thinking she was dead as well and being the start of his trauma and tragedy for around a decade, starting Billy's downward spiral as a person becoming a hate-filled maniac who wants to kill all Supes on the planet.
- He has done multiple horrific acts like letting a plane of hundreds of civilians crash, clapping to destroy a blind superhero’s eardrums, forcing the Deep to eat a live octopus begging for his life or forcing a suicidal girl to kill herself after just regaining the will to live.
- He is abusive and controlling towards everybody close to him, notably Ashley and the Deep who he treats like slaves.
