~ Jabba the Hutt to Luke Skywalker. |
Jabba Desilijic Tiure, known to everyone else as Jabba The Hutt, is a major antagonist in Star Wars.
He was portrayed by several puppeteers and voiced by the late Larry Ward.
His Qualities[]
What Makes Him Entertaining?[]
- He is an icon of Star Wars in his own right.
- His voice is epic, especially in the original trilogy.
- He can be very intimidating and cunning as best showcased when he is interacting with "Boushh" and when he brags that Jedi mind tricks do not work on him, as he is completely used to making such situations completely lucrative for him and emerging without a scratch. Then he just had to go and deliberately infuriate the daughter of Darth Vader.
- He has a wonderful relationship with his son, Rotta the Hutt, threatening to harm those who harm him and calling him pet names. He also had a "Pet the Dog" moment in which he allowed Pantorans to get a blood sample from his bounty hunter Greedo, meaning he felt empathy for other fathers too.
- He and his head of security, Ephant Mon, are genuinely close friends.
- When he promised the Jedi access his hyperspace routes in return for saving Rotta, he honored his word.
- When Star Waver pleased him with their performance, he showed them all mercy.
- When Han jettisoned his cargo and shot his hitman Greedo, he gave him a second chance to pay his debts.
What Makes Him Detestable?[]
- He is an extremely sadistic and hedonistic crime lord/mob boss who has enslaved many, many people and enabled others on Tatooine to do the same. Some of them are also Anakin Skywalker and his mother, so due to this, he has a major part in his turn into Darth Vader. He cared very little for those who served him, as evidenced by him being indifferent to accidentally dropping one of his guards into the Rancor's pit. What's especially baffling is that he expected the Gamorrean to fight Luke for him when the guard's fate was already sealed at that point.
- While he was willing to team up with the Jedi when the Separatists kidnapped Rotta, this is out of pure and utter pragmatism because he wants his son back.
- He harvested the brains of his enemies using the jars and techniques of the B'omarr Monks.
- He collected multiple women and enslaved them, essentially forcing them into sex slavery. He was incredibly abusive to one such slave, Oola, chaining her by the neck and eventually sentencing her to death, and he presumably treated the others in similarly cruel ways. This was after he had just tried to reel Oola to him whilst creepily licking his lips, terrifying her into resisting him (it would have terrified anybody). When Leia Organa freed Han Solo, he replaced Oola with her and forced her to wear a very uncomfortable-looking trophy bikini before chaining her to his throne as his latest sex slave in what was one of the most infamous "Kick the Dog" moments in cinematic history. Even though she gave him a death threat and undid his favorite decoration, his punishment was far too harsh and the poor girl didn't deserve it at all.
- He helped Darth Maul and Savage Opress to form the Shadow Collective when they made quick work of his palace's security and threatened his life.
- He sadistically hung Han Solo on the wall when he was frozen in carbonite. While they had presumably agreed on a punishment if Han's debts were not paid on time, Jabba still went way too far with his punishment .
- When Luke requests an audience to bargain for Han and presents C-3PO and R2-D2 as gifts to exhibit his goodwill, Jabba greedily took the droids, but refused to speak with Luke, ordering Bib Fortuna to bar his entrance.
- After Luke killed the Rancor, and Han accidentally threw Boba Fett into the sarlaac, Jabba swore Luke would suffer for the "outrage", and he began crying out in disbelief at Boba's fate, only because he was upset at the loss of such useful and powerful assets to his criminal empire, rather than because he supposedly loved the Rancor as a pet and loved Boba as a person.
- The most detestable thing he did (which is saying something) was when he tried to feed Luke and his friends to the sarlaac, which is a fate worse than death since they would be eaten while still alive for over a thousand years. He lets Leia live, but only because he wants to keep treating her like a sexual object. His death by being strangled by Leia using the chain he bounded her with, while very brutal, is not played for sympathy at all and is karmic for all he has done, including the fact that he was killed by a person he had enslaved.
- His legacy leads to Bib Fortuna having a five-year reign of terror before Boba Fett silences him and begins setting things right around Tatooine, resolving to be a better leader and a much, much better person.
Trivia[]
- He originally had a page on Hate Sink Wiki before he was removed due to having some qualities that gave him some slight complexity, most prominently his love for Rotta the Huttlet. The screenwriters would not have given him such a redeeming quality if the goal was to make the Hutt as loathsome as possible, giving credence to the idea he was written to be an entertaining and over-the-top baddie from the get-go.
