“ | I doubt that I need an introduction, but just in case, I am Junko Enoshima, the True Ultimate Despair... and yes, all the horrible stories you've heard about me are indeed true! | „ |
~ Junko Enoshima. |
Junko Enoshima is the main antagonist of the Danganronpa franchise.
She is the creater of Monokuma, as well as the founder of the organization known as "Ultimate Despair", a terrorist organization responsible for "The Worst, Most Despair-Inducing Incident in the History of Mankind", being mastermind behind every installment's major conflicts.
She was voiced by Megumi Toyoguchi in Japanese. In English, she was voiced by Erin Fitzgerald and Amanda Celine Miller in the games but Jamie Marchi in the anime. She was also played by the late Sayaka Kanda in the stage play adaptation.
Her Qualities[]
What Makes Her Entertaining?[]
- She is the creator of series mascot Monokuma, and his memorable personality is an extension of hers.
- Her being designed as a cute girl with a purely evil personality creates a brilliant juxtaposition in her characterization.
- Though it doesn't detract from her heinousness, Junko has a multitude of comedic moments that easily make her one of the most entertaining characters to watch. She is incredibly hammy and always puts on a big, cartoonishly theatric show of her crimes while acting like a movie star. She also frequently experiences mood-swings where she flips between multiple over-the-top personalities, all of which are hilarious, sometimes within the same sentence. Junko obviously loves her work.
- For the majority of Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, she was able to keep her true identity hidden behind the robotic avatar of Monokuma up until the game's final trial. She had her twin sister Mukuro Ikusaba disguised as her and join the group of students she was tormenting in order to keep the coverup working. Behind the scenes, Junko worked as the mastermind behind a ludicrously complex plan that even a room full of teen prodigies struggled to untangle.
- She has a distinct and fairly attractive design.
- While not truly honorable, she takes having her plans foiled and getting killed by the heroes surprisingly well, not just accepting death but gleefully embracing it. As a despair-obsessed sadomasochist, Junko is overjoyed by the immense feeling of hopelessness as she executes herself. This subverts the villainous breakdown she had earlier.
- Both her voice actors do an excellent performance as Junko, perfecting her hammy but depraved personality. Special thanks goes to her English voice actresses, Amanda C. Miller and Jamie Marchi, who the former does a great job voicing her comedic but sadistic sense of humor in shocking contrast to her other roles such as Sailor Jupiter from Sailor Moon and the titular Boruto from Boruto Next Generations. The latter who is known for voicing dark and edgy characters like Elizabeth Thompson from Soul Eater and Panty from Panty Stocking with Garterbelt, Jamie Marchi does a excellent performance doing her horrifying yet Laughably Evil performance of her while hiding her psychopathic personality under her charismatic exterior.
- As shown in Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, before her death, Junko created an AI copy of herself that would carry on her work after death.
- She is charismatic. She was able to build a cult around herself in the form of Ultimate Despair through a mix of brainwashing and genuinely convincing them.
- She is good at manipulating people. She was able to manipulate the Warriors of Hope into being her footsoldiers. She was also able to manipulate Izuru Kamukura, the Ultimate Hope himself, into serving her agenda by having him join a killing game.
- Despite being sadomasochistic in nature, Junko does genuinely care about her sister Mukuro Ikusuba, Yasuke Matsuda and her classmates (including Makoto Naegi).
What Makes Her Detestable?[]
- Her general personality has absolutely zero redeeming qualities to it, and her characterization makes it absolutely certain that the viewer has no doubts that she's nothing but evil. Even in the bonus modes of the main games like UTDP and Ultimate Summer Camp where Junko isn't outright plotting the apocalypse for her own amusement, she still acts like an abusive, self-centered jerk.
- While her constant joking at her enemies' expense makes her comedic, it also establishes just how little empathy she has for her victims and how she simply sees her crimes as something to laugh at.
- She has committed a litany of incredibly heinous crimes, such as:
- Causing a cataclysmic event called "the Worst, Most Despair-Inducing Incident in the History of Mankind."
- Frequently abusing her sister Mukuro Ikusaba, not merely in spite of but because of Mukuro's love for her.
- Forcing several high-schoolers to participate in her sadistic killing-games. Should the players lose the games, they will be painfully executed.
- Performing a lobotomy on Chisa Yukizome.
- Torturing Chiaki Nanami to death while Chikai's classmates in Class 77-B watched.
- Killing her sister Mukuro.
- Forcing many of her classmates in Class 78th to kill each other.
- Driving Sakura Ogami to the point of suicide.
- Her motive effectively boils down to "for the evulz," as she is obsessed with the concept of despair and commits the worst atrocities purely for the sake of spreading the feeling. Her obsession leads her to wholeheartedly enjoy inflicting pain on others and driving them to the depths of despair for her own twisted amusement.
- Her care and love for her sister and friends doesn't make her less hateable, as the more she loves them, the more she desires to hurt and kill them so that she can become more despair.
- She is incredibly arrogant, egotistical, and full of herself.
- Ironically, her own sadomasochistic love for despair sets her plans back, as she often did stupid things like killing her allies just for an emotional rush.
Trivia[]
- Junko Enoshima is the current icon for the spoilers template.
- In a 2015 interview with the Spanish-language news site Koi-Nya, Kazutaka Kodaka claimed that in designing Junko, he wanted to "create a really cute character who was evil. Also that she had the idea that absolute evil is something desirable and pleasant. As bad as she is, she is so powerful and charming that she draws you in."[1]
