I've never considered you an ally. Not even for a second. Not you. Not Kushida. Not Hirata. People are nothing but tools to me. All of them. I don't care what I have to do to win. I don't care what I have to sacrifice. In this world, winning is everything. In the end... I'm going to win. That's all that matters.
~ Kiyotaka Ayanokōji's monologue to Suzune Horikita.
Self-centered people could be hard to handle, even if they have superior talent. However, people who could follow instructions would always be in demand, a highly sought-after resource.
~ Kiyotaka Ayanokōji

Kiyotaka Ayanokōji is the main protagonist of the manga, anime and light novel series Classroom of the Elite. He is currently a second-year student at Koudo Ikusei Senior High School and is the most famous and successful student from the White Room. On the entrance exam he purposely scored 50 out of 100, which placed him in Class 1-D. He got promoted to Class 1-C but went back to 1-D due to Tsukishiro's sabotage at the Event Selection Exam.

He was voiced by Natsuki Hanae in the PV 2015, by Shōya Chiba in Japanese and by Justin Briner in English.

His Qualities[]

What Makes Him Entertaining?[]

  • Ayanokoji is widely considered the most intelligent character in the series and for good reason too. He is a brilliant chess master who served as the Mastermind of Class D behind the scenes by using ingenious manipulations to ensure that his class would remain successful all while keeping a low profile as a normal student.
  • His voice actors do a good job of bringing out Ayanokoji's character by both giving him a casual performance when not acting as a mastermind and providing a threatening one when he does which makes the character even cooler.
  • Through his manipulations, Ayanokoji successfully takes down many credible threats such as Kikyo Kushida and Kakeru Ryuen, with the latter showing respect and honor to Kiyotaka.
  • Outside of his intelligence, Kiyotaka is also rather strong as he is not only physically athletic but is also an incredibly skilled fighter to the point of taking down Ryuen's entire group by himself in a physical fight.
  • He has a tragic backstory of being raised in the White Room which caused him to become the emotionless villain he was at the beginning of the series.
  • Despite his machiavellian nature, Ayanokoji is still capable of helping others as an anti-hero and believes that his father's philosophy is wrong.
  • He provides an interesting perspective and philosophy about his worldly views to the audience.
  • While psychopathic by nature, Kiyotaka has many interesting and complex relationships with his classmates such as with Kei and Suzune.

What Makes Him Detestable?[]

  • By his own admission, he is a sociopath who sees people as nothing more than tools to use just so that he could win, admitting that he only saw Horikita, Kushida and Hirata as pawns and never as allies due to believing that winning is all that matters in the world with Horikita even remarking that Ayanokoji never truly cared about his friends.
  • He was willing to deal the killing blow to Ichinose's reputation if he was able to benefit from it, which appalled Suzune with his ruthlessness.
  • The biggest reason as to why he can't be a Magnificent Baddie is because of his horrific physical and emotional abuse to Kei Karuizawa in order to make her his pawn which includes:
    • Preventing a classmate from reporting Karuizawa's three bullies from Class C to the schools authorities.
    • Enabling and even guiding said bullies to trap Karuizawa and brutally beat her up. This was mainly done to keep Karuizawa vulnerable to his manipulations by making her emotionally broken and vulnerable. Kiyotaka even compares the bullying he orchestrated to Stanley Milgram's unethical shock experiments but shows no remorse for this despite that.
    • Afterwards, Ayanokoji goes up to Kei and initially threatens to expose her past of bullying. He then asks Kei to spread her legs in a disturbingly predatory manner which constitutes sexual harassment. When Kei rejects it, he forcibly lifts up her shirt to show a stab wound before exploiting her past to make Kei his pawn.
    • Emotionally neglects her by suddenly cutting off contact despite Kei's obvious feelings for him.
    • Allows Kei to be horrifically tortured by Ryuen and his classmates, only saving her at the last second and apathetically waiting until then simply to ensure that she would remain a loyal and useful pawn to his plots.
