Kyubey is the main antagonist of the anime and manga series Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
Kyubey is a small, cute alien creature that forms contracts with girls to create a source of good to fight against the seemingly supernatural manifestation of negative emotions called witches by granting them any one wish in exchange. However, Kyubey betrays their trust by leaving out a few large details about the true nature of their contract with him, and is unable to earn it back when telling them his true purpose.
He is voiced by Emiri Katō in Japanese and Cassandra Lee Morris in English.
What Makes Him Entertaining?[]
- He is a highly intelligent manipulator, can trick multiple girls into making contract with him.
- He speaks in a calm and friendly attitude towards the girls even after he reveals his true nature, giving him a shade of evil-is-cool.
- Despite how horrible his crimes are, he isn't too vile as he comes from a hive-mind species that cannot act against their desire to prolong the life of the universe because they are a purely logical species with no understanding of emotion.
- Cassandra Lee Morris does a fantastic performance of portraying his manipulative and callous nature, contrasting other characters she plays such as Taiga Aisaka from Toradora and Leafa from Sword Art Online.
- He is a well-intentioned extremist, as all his villainous deed is to collect energies from depaired magical girls to stop the universe from heat death.
- He is considered as one of the most iconic villains in Magical Girl typed story.
What Makes Him Detestable?[]
- Despite being well-intentioned, he is arguably the most hated character by Puella Magi Madoka fanbase, due to his psychologicaly abusing vulnerable young girls into making them sign up the contracts for way more than they bargained for.
- He is ultimately the cause of all the tragedies in the story. By tricking the girls into making contract with him, he made multiple girls transformed into witches in despair, and the witches caused even more deaths themselves.
- He completely lacks empathy towards the suffering the girls endured, even mocking Homura for her inability to change anything.
- Due to his flawed understanding of humanity, his attempts of manipulating Madoka opens a wide door for her to royally screw him over by the series finale.
- He is also a coward who don't hesitate to run away when things get bad for him as shown when he try to escape from Homucifer when she become more powerfull than him, this is also particularly detestable when we know that Kyubey is indirectly the cause of Homura's transformation and has now the power to destroy the universe if she want, showing that he doesn't really care about protecting it.
