Lao Gui is a major antagonist of Yakuza 0. He servers as one of two secondary antagonists (alongside Tsukasa Sagawa), the final boss of Goro Majima's story and a minor but important antagonist in Kiryu Kazama's story.
He is a Chinese assassin and the most dangerous and expensive hitman in all of Asia. He is also under employment from Sohei Dojima, the main antagonist of the game. It's heavily implied that he was responsible for killing the man that Kiryu was framed for murdering, which led to the events of the game.
He's voiced by Koji Suzuki in Japanese. In the Chinese version, he's modeled after and voiced by Sam Lee.
His Qualities[]
What Makes Him Entertaining?[]
- For starters, he's a ruthless hitman who is able to succeed in all of his hits, with none of his targets (prior to Kiryu) living to tell the tale.
- He has a very cool and creepy design that looks out of place for the cast of Yakuza 0 (with the exception of Shimano)
- He can be clever as he makes his murder of Taichi Kurihara look like an amateur's hit, something that a professional like him was able to do. This would end up making Kiryu become the prime suspect of Kurihara's murder.
- His first scene shows him shooting Kiryu from above, severely wounding him, showing that he's a Combat Pragmatist. Afterwards he performs a series of stylish jumps akin to parkour to get down on the ground and corner the two.
- In fact, Kiryu might have died if not for Tachibana giving himself up to save the latter.
- He also doesn't hesitate to take action as seen with the aforementioned scene of Kiryu getting shot by him on sight, he was also about to do the same to Majima if not for Awano blocking the shots meant for him, forcing Lao to kill Awano.
- He has an incredible fight with Majima that considered to be one of the best boss fights of the series. The fight begins with the two men yelling, followed by Lao throwing his needles at Majima, forcing Majima to dodge them and dodges Majima's incoming attack by flipping over the latter. During the fight, Lao would have three phases. First are his needles that he uses as throwable weapons and as makeshift claws. The second phase has Lao uses a Chinese broadsword and his silenced pistol but not before starting with a QTE that has Majima dodge a broadsword and a shot from Lao's pistol. The third and final phase starts with a QTE of Lao being disarmed by Majima, causing him to charge at Majima and attempting to crush Majima's remaining eye (failing the QTE will result in this happening) Lao would fight Majima with a mix of multiple marital arts styles and acrobatics which he also used in his previous two phases.
- Overall, Lao Gui shows a huge Evil Is Cool presence and this made him one of RGG Studios' terrifying villains.
What Makes Him Detestable?[]
- He's a ruthless hitman with no nonsense who kills whoever his client wanted dead for money.
- Under orders of Sohei Dojima, he kills Taichi Kurihara and has Kiryu framed for his death, starting the plot of Yakuza 0.
- His first scene was introduced with him almost killing Kiryu forcing Tachibana to allow himself to be captured just to spare Kiryu's life.
- Under orders from Dojima, he shoots Makoto Makimura when Dojima rejects her offer of the Empty Lot, due to believing that her cooperation is unnecessary to his plans. This would send Majima into a rampage to the Dojima Family HQ (although it was later revealed that Shibusawa secretly ordered Lao Gui to not kill Makoto but instead shoot her nonlethally).
- He kills a redeemed Awano by shooting him in many areas of his body multiple times as a way to prolong his suffering, followed by stabbing Awano with six of his needles.
- After getting beaten by Majima, he laughs nervously, as he is scared that Majima would kill him and was only spared thanks to Sera's interference.
- Overall, he can be considered the darkest character within Yakuza 0, as his actions are taken 100% seriously.
