“ | (chuckles evilly) I have a plan for everything! I have had his life studied. Remote scanning has imaged every one of his friends. This unit is applying those scans now.[...] Because no one will be on his side. Everyone in his life will be a robot duplicate controlled by ME! | „ |
~ Master Control's plan to replace everyone on Earth with his robots, in order to kill Garfield. |
Master Control is the main antagonist of The Garfield Show 5-part special, "The Mean Machine". He is the supreme ruler of Sprocket, a planet whose population had been enslaved by technology, as well as an enemy of Garfield.
He was voiced by Mark Hamill who voices Luke Skywalker in Star Wars and Megatronus in Transformers: Prime Wars Trilogy.
His Qualities[]
What Makes Him Entertaining?[]
- He is very intelligent and a good strategist. While most of these moments are very despicable due to enslaving people and trying to kill the heroes, they are also meant to show his cunningness:
- Despite being a robot, he grew beyond his programming and showed that he is opportunistic, taking advantage of the Sprocket people over-reliance on technology and succesfully enslaving them, with only a few Sprocket people escaping from him due to not being over-reliant on technology.
- He started his plan of enslaving the whole universe, with the planet Earth, because he figured out the people on Earth forgot that they should be in-command of the technology, not the other way around, so he can have an advantage in his plan.
- He figured out that Zoey is the person who answers all of Earth's people questions and kidnapped her in order to replace her with Metalla, so she can impersonate Zoey in order to lead them to his base and enslave them.
- After noticing that Garfield is the only person on Earth who never takes orders from anyone, (including technology) he never underestimated him and always tried to stop him at all costs:
- He came out with a brilliant plan to build robot clones that look identical to all of Garfield's friends, so they can trick Garfield into believing that his friends turned against him and kill him, in order for his plans to not be foiled.
- After seeing that Techno tried to trick Garfield into believing that the robot clone of Vito is the real Vito, he immediately orders him to change the robot settings to try to kill Garfield, stating that he is a danger to his plans and that tricking him is not important.
- When he noticed that the robot clone of Eddie Gourmand was way too slow to catch Garfield and Odie, he ordered Techno to activate the Jump Mode, so the robot can continuously jump in order to catch Garfield and Odie much easier, showing that he can improvise when needed.
- While Garfield did succesfully escape from his robots, he had cameras that monitorized every movement of his meaning that he could have just used his robots to find Garfield again and again. This is seen later in the special after Garfield believed that they will never find him at his house, he was proven wrong when the robot clones arrived at his home, right after his statemment.
- He sent his robots to eliminate Garfield, Odie and Bleen when they were arriving on Sprocket while in space, knowing that they are a threat to his plans.
- While he was tricked at first by them, unlike his robots, he did saw through Garfield, Odie and Bleen's disguises as his robots after he noticed Garfield's tails sticking out from his costume, even when Techno was skeptical that it was them.
- Instead of sending his white robots, he sent Goliath, a giant chicken robot who is the guardian of the cable planet, knowing that he would stop Garfield, Odie and Bleen from deconnecting the planet's cable that aliments the technology.
- He has a very cool army of fighting robots that serve him, such as:
- White robots with lasers and electric shields who can fly and have flexible hands that can be streched out, which serve as his soldiers that Master Control always sends them to eliminate his enemies.
- Goliath, a dangerous giant chicken robot with hand saws who is the guardian of the planet's giant plug system that aliments energy in Sprocket.
- His assistant Techno, him being the one who commands his robots.
- His other assistant Metalla, her being the one who manipulates the people into coming on Sprocket, so Master Control can enslave them.
- Robot clones who can be intelligent at times, such as when they tried to surround Garfield around a bus, so he cannot escape, in order to catch him. Additionally the robot clone of Vito, remembered that Garfield tricked him earlier by escaping on the opposide side from the side the robot entered, which gave the other robots this idea.
- They also have lasers just like the white robots.
- The songs he sings during the special, "The Fat Cat" and Alarm Song" while dark are very entertaining as they have cool lyrics and great scenery that are meant to show to the audience how determined he is in achieving his plans and his obsession with killing Garfield.
- His faux redemption song "Mean Machine Finale" while more light-hearted is also entertaining and comedic since it shows how he was programmed from a threatening robot who wanted to enslave the whole universe to Garfield's personal chef who does mundane cooking and there is even a scene where he drives Garfield and Odie on water, similar to surfing.
- His design is great, being a huge dark-colored red robot with unique features such his initial form being an egg-shaped probe, flexible hands and a a pair of yak horn-shaped antenna with a blue spark crossing each other.
- While they do not detract from his villainy and are only meant to show how evil he is, Master Control still has a few comedic moments that make him more enjoyable such as, him calling Techno an idiot while stating that he does not care about fooling Garfield with Vito's robot clone and slamming the ground, or him yelling like a madman when Garfield escaped that "the cat got away".
- Unlike other The Garfield Show villains who either come of as too comedic to be taken seriously or are incompetent in their villainy, he does not display any incomptence and is taken seriously as a threat, nearly suceeding in his plans and only being stopped by circumstances beyond his control.
- Mark Hamill does a great job at voicing Master Control, giving him a hammy but also an intimidating presence, making him one of the most memorable Garfield villains.
- He made "The Mean Machine" one of the most memorable specials of the show due to his army of robots, his cunningness and great performance.
What Makes Him Detestable?[]
- His motivation of enslaving the universe because the people used technology too much for everyday tasks is far too petty to make him tragic, given that the people did not intend to overuse technology and simply became over-reliant due to how easy it makes their lives. Furthermore he is aware of all of this, given that he takes advantage of their technodependence to enslave them and is only motivated by power, not by his so-called tragedy.
- This is shown at the end of the special where he has a villainous breakdown about how he should have conquered the whole universe while knowing that Garfield is a threat to his plans.
- Followed by the previous point, he enslaved all of the Sprocket people and Earth people and was willing to enslave the whole universe, forcing them to work in his robot factory, all day without paying them, showing that he does not value his slaves, simply seeing them as pawns.
- He kidnapped Zoey and locked her away in a cell that requires the cable to be disconnected in order to be opened and escape, so she cannot escape by herself.
- He intended to turn all of the organic lives, in robots controlled by him.
- He treated Techno very poorly and constantly abused him such as when he grabbed him and threw him away like an object, lashing out at him whenever things did not go his way, threatening to kill him if he fails to kill Garfield and most infamously when he sent him into slavery for his failures, even though he was loyal to him and always followed his orders.
- While he is never abusive towards Metalla and his other robots, nothing indicates that he cares for them, simply seeing them as his minions.
- He attempted to kill Garfield, Odie and Bleen multiple times for trying to foil his plans, using some brutal ways to do so such as when he sent Goliath who used giant hand saws in order to cut them alive and taking sadistic pleasure in doing so.
- While still a bog-standard villain, he is one of the most despicable The Garfield Show villains, due to his willingness to enslave the universe and force people to work in his robot factory without paying them forever, his abuse towards Techno and coming close to killing the main heroes along with not having any redeeming qualities and remorse for his actions. Even his redemption at the end of the special it is only because he was programmed into being good and serve Garfield as his personal chef, not out of a change of heart.
- These actions stand out from other The Garfield Show villains due to how uniquely disgusting they are, since no other villain in the series was willing to enslave the entire universe and while most of the other villains only commit harmless actions that are played for laughs, his actions are always played seriously and he is considered a threat by all of the other characters.
