Mayuri Kurotsuchi is a major character from the manga/anime series, Bleach.
He is the captain of the 12th division of the Gotei 13 where he is in charge of the military's scientific research and technology institute. Prior to this, he was a prisoner of the Maggot's Nest before being taken under Kisuke Urahara's wing in the 3rd seat of the 12th division.
In the original Japanese version of the anime, he is voiced by Ryusei Nakao. In the English Dub, he is voiced by Terrance Stone.
His Qualities[]
What Makes Him Entertaining?[]
- Both Ryusei Nakao in the Japanese version and Terrance Stone in the English version do an excellent job voicing Mayuri, perfectly capturing his personality as a sadistic mad scientist.
- He has one of the most original and unique character designs in all of Bleach, with black and white makeup covering his entire face and numerous gold decorations. In addition, his appearance changes several times throughout the series.
- He has a very original way of fighting compared to most Shinigami, because he does not use his sword very often, relying more on all kinds of poisons, traps, as well as numerous modifications of his own body, such as flexible arms or organic blades drawn from the sides of his head.
- Surprisingly, for a scientist constantly striving for further development and improvement, he completely despises the idea of "perfection", considering it to be completely worthless, as once it is achieved, the scientist loses any limitations, and the lack of limitations means no development and further evolution, which ultimately it only leads to despair.
- Mayuri is one of the most intelligent characters in the entire series, as he is an incredibly talented scientist responsible for many useful inventions in Soul Society, is extremely strategic, and will thoroughly research his potential opponent before each fight to be able to tip the scales in his favor.
- He had some funny, comedic moments often related to his nonchalance and unpredictability, such as the resurrection of Nemu after defeating Szayel Aporro in a way that looked extremely... ambiguous, which is further confirmed by the comic reactions of Uryu and Renji, and when Uryu broke the 4th wall pointing out that such a scene couldn't be shown on TV, Mayuri immediately roast him, stating that he would definitely show this, considering how excited he looked at that moment.
- Despite his cruelty and sadism, as well as his general lack of respect for any life most of the time, Mayuri is very loyal to the Soul Society, and any experiments he conducts are only for the good of the entire Seireitei. In addition, Mayuri is very obsessed with creating new life, and his greatest dream is to create a soul from nothing.
What Makes Him Detestable?[]
- Mayuri embodies many of the classic traits of a mad scientist, being extremely unpredictable in his actions, ruthless, devoid of empathy for most of the lives he takes or tortures, and above all, he is one of the most sadistic characters in the entire series, loving to toy with his opponents by torturing them in various ways until they are unable to do anything, which was clearly visible during his fight with Uryu Ishida and Szayel Aporro Granz.
- He sees practically everything and everyone not as living beings, but as mere objects of experiments, even himself. As such, he has no problem treating any incidents inhumanely as long as it brings some benefit to himself or Soul Society.
- He is so ruthless that he can sacrifice his own people without any remorse, just to gain an advantage. This was seen during Mayuri's fight with Uryu, whom he had his own people turn (without their knowledge) into living bombs and blew them up to kill both him and Orihime in one go.
- Most of the time, he was incredibly abusive and brutal towards his own daughter and lieutenant, Nemu, beating and humiliating her whenever she let him down or disobeyed him, such as getting in his way when he was about to attack Ishida. Uryu himself felt only disgust and contempt for Mayuri, unable to understand how he could treat his own subordinate like that, to which the latter coldly replied that he had every right to do so, as she was his daughter, created by him.

- He, Sōsuke Aizen and Yhwach are the only Bleach characters to be Entertainingly Detestable.
