Peace through tyranny!
~ Megatron's motto.
I would have waited an eternity for this. It's over, Prime.
~ Megatron after mortally wounding Optimus Prime.

Megatron, later known as Galvatron, is the main antagonist of the Transformers franchise.

He is the founder and leader of the Decepticons who plots to conquer the planet Cybertron and the rest of the universe. He is the arch-nemesis of Optimus Prime, the leader of the Decepticon's rival faction, the Autobots.

He was voiced by Frank Welker, who also voiced Soundwave in the series.

What Makes Him Entertaining?[]

  • The portrayal of his original incarnation has established him as one of the most iconic villains in cartoon and comic history of all time.
  • Frank Welker did an outstanding performance of voicing Megatron, capturing his ruthless, power-hungry and cunning nature, in addition to giving him an unforgettable evil laugh. Leonard Nimoy also did a stellar performance as Galvatron in the 1986 film, before Welker reprised his role in the third season of the cartoon.
  • He has a number of memorable lines, such as:
    • "Everything I touch is food for my hunger. My hunger for power!"
    • "Such heroic nonsense."
    • "I would have waited an eternity for this. It's over, Prime."
  • He combines his commanding, menacing presence, nearly unmatched brute strength and combat proficiency with a knack for devising many crafty schemes, making him one of the most powerful and formidable adversaries that the Autobots have ever faced.
  • In the comics, he has some respect for Ratchet and also tries to persuade him to join his cause.
  • In the cartoon, he always maintains his control over the Decepticons, quickly crushing the opposition of any subordinate (especially Starscream) who tries to overthrow him.
  • He further proves to be a threatening villain in that he actually succeeds in conquering Cybertron and even killing Optimus Prime.

What Makes Him Detestable?[]

  • He is a bloodthirsty warmonger and mass murderer who has cruelly killed numerous innocents, including multiple Autobots, unrelated innocents and even his own decepticons all in service for his megalomaniacal ambitions to conquer Cybertron and later, the entire universe.
  • He usually resorts to dirty tricks to defeat his opponents, including cheating in a one-on-one fight with Prime by gaining every power in his grasp and begging for mercy to reach for his pistol.
  • He attempts to steal all energy resources of Earth for himself and the Decepticons.
  • He is a Bad Boss who frequently abuses and insults his troops for failure and becomes even worse as Galvatron, as he is willing to attack anyone due to his ever-growing insanity, which makes even some of his loyal Decepticons betray him in the end.
  • Megatron has no attachment to Cybertron and is willing to see it destroyed if he can't have it or can find a better planet. Megatron's war machine is have used by all of Cybertron's resources, making him responsible for the planet's energy crisis.
  • He makes a short-lived pact with Unicron to kill the Autobots and destroy the Matrix, all the while planning to betray Unicron later.
  • Similarly Galvatron later sells out Cybertron and allies with the Quintessons to the disgust of many of his own decepticon warriors.
  • In Beast Wars, it is revealed that Megatron left behind the Golden Disk, a device he used to keep his final will in case he lost the war in which he instructs any Decepticon descendant to travel to prehistoric Earth, kill the unconscious Optimus Prime and wipe out the ancestors of humanity which leads his successor, Predacon Megatron, to commit some of his heinous deeds, making the original Megatron partially responsible for his successor's villainy.
    • In addition to this, if the theory of G1 Megatron's spark influencing Beast Megatron's spark and mental state is confirmed to be true during the final episodes of Beast Wars and across Beast Machines, it would make G1 Megatron even worse.
