~ Kuroiwa's most famous voice line during his fight with Yagami. |
Mitsuru Kuroiwa is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Yoji Shono) and the final boss of the 2018 action-adventure game Judgment, a spinoff of the Like a Dragon/Yakuza series. He is a detective working for the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department's Organized Crime Division and the true identity of The Mole: a hired assassin responsible for multiple murders that have the victims' eyes gorged out.
He was voiced by and modeled after Shosuke Tanihara in Japanese and was voiced by Matthew Mercer in the English dub.
His Qualities[]
What Makes Him Entertaining?[]
- His voice actors' give a great performance as Kuroiwa that made him entertaining to some fans.
- He is cunning as he is able to hide his identify as The Mole for 20 years without getting caught. He does this in various ways, such as arresting Kyohei Hamura for the death of three Kyorei Clan members, since there were evidence pointing to him being behind the murders.
- The scene where he (as The Mole) walks into the burning building gives fans goosebumps.
- His boss fights with Yagami are considered to be one of the best fights in the RGG games, it might be even considered to be the best boss fight in the Judgement series.
- He has an amazing boss theme in the form of Penumbra and its variants, all of them fitting Kuroiwa's terrifying presence.
- He has a very cool fighting style which seems to mirror Yagami's fighting style, even copying some of his moves.
- His Dynamic Intros and QTEs are amazing, due to the excellent fight choreography which makes Kuroiwa look badass.
- His final Dynamic Intro depicts him coming back onto the building by crawling himself back to the broken window, injecting himself with adrenaline, and letting out a terrifying roar as his health is completely refilled for one last phase.
- Overall, his VA's great performance, epic boss fights and having a terrifying presence made him considered by fans to be one of RGG's most intimidating villains ever made.
What Makes Him Detestable?[]
- He is a hired assassin who would commit heinous crimes such as murder, kidnapping and conspiring without feeling remorse for his actions.
- Even before the reveal that he is The Mole, Kuroiwa would bother and antagonizing Yagami and his friends throughout the story doing such things like accusing Yagami of murdering Shintani, threatening to arrest him and overall being a jerk who takes pleasure of heckling Yagami.
- He doesn't care for any of his murder victims, or anybody in general and only cares for himself. He doesn't even care for his longtime partner, Kyohei Hamura (even attempting to kill him at one point).
- He kidnaps various members of the Kyorei Clan for them to get experimented on for the AD-9 experiments resulting in three of those members were killed and have their eyes gouged out due to the experiments causing the subjects' eyes to turn blue, which would be a clear sign of human experimentation.
- He is one of the few RGG villains to have killed more than one named character. His victims include:
- Toru Hashiki, the vice director of the Advanced Drug Development Center whom Kuroiwa critically injured and killed because the former was planning to expose the truth behind AD-9, a new drug said to be the cure for Alzheimer's which in reality is lethal for humans, as ordered to by AD-9's lead developer, Yoji Shono.
- Masamichi Shintani, Yagami's mentor who was killed by Kuroiwa under orders of Kaoru Ichinose after Hamura told him to look into Shono after the latter was arrested, whilst using Ayabe's gun to do so to frame him and carving out Shintani's eyes in a similar manner to the AD-9 test subjects for good measure.
- Mitsugu Matsugane, the patriarch of the Matsugane Family who took a bullet meant for Hamura, whom Kuroiwa attempted to kill. Matsugane's death would deeply sadden Hamura, causing him to turn against AD-9 and exposed Kuroiwa as the Mole.
- And Satoshi Shioya, the Kyorei Clan captain whom Kuroiwa kidnaps and takes him to Shono to be experimented on, before dumping his dead body back in Kamurocho with his eyes removed.
- Beats up Masaharu Kaito and Toru Higashi to a bloody pulp with a blackjack upon arriving in Charles where ADDC director Ryusuke Kido was held captive
- During his first fight with Yagami, Kuroiwa picks up a corkscrew and attempts to gouge out Yagami's eyes. After the fight he points his gun at Yagami and threatens to shoot him, before he is stopped by Kunihiko Morita.
- He shot and killed three homeless men that were send by Shono causing him to seek revenge by holding Shono captive.
- At the ADDC building, he murders multiple police officers. Afterwards, Kuroiwa reveals to Yagami that he wants Shono to kept alive so he can finish AD-9 and release it to the public, which he believes will make them heroes, and says he is willing to collect as many test subjects as it takes to succeed, and threatens to Yagami that he will have his eyes cut out once he is killed, before his final fight with Yagami begins.
- When he is defeated, he makes a final attempt to kill Shono, before being shot to death by police officers who have arrived at the scene.
- Sadistically smirks at Shono suffering the same fate as the other AD-9 victims, realizing why the AD-9 had to have their eyes removed as Shono's eyes turned blue.
