“ | Long live the Empire! | „ |
~ Moff Gideon's motto for the Galactic Empire - one of his most famous quotes. |
Moff Gideon is the main antagonist of the 2019 Disney+ Star Wars live-action streaming series The Mandalorian.
His Qualities[]
What Makes Him Entertaining?[]
- Giancarlo Esposito delivers an incredible performance for the character, being said to "play the role to perfection". Esposito has stated that one of his inspirations for his performance of Moff Gideon was Grand Moff Tarkin, which is very fitting as Tarkin is likewise Entertainingly Detestable.
- He makes a genuinely intimidating villain, being described as "absolutely magnificent" and "pretty damn scary".
- He was intentionally designed to be a combination of Darth Vader and Grand Moff Tarkin, having many similarities with the two.
- He is shown to be extremely formidable, intelligent and ruthless, making him a force to be reckoned with in the show and one of the most dangerous villains in Star Wars.
- He faked his death after the Empire's fall, leading a sizeable Imperial remnant to restore the Galactic Empire in his image and bring order to the galaxy. Cara Dune initially thought that he had been executed by the New Republic, and Din Djarin thought that he would be tried and executed if caught.
- He has a nice and intimidating character design, which looks similar to Darth Vader's.
- He is smarter than the average Imperial Officer, usually planning ahead for virtually every contingency and "seems to know everything about everyone".
- He is shown to be a patriot of the Galactic Empire who considered his cause just, and would not hesitate to rebuild it from scratch. This is emphasized through the line "long live the Empire!" which is one of his most famous quotes.
- He is an expert master manipulator, as seen when he sets up his own underling, the Client, to be killed and lures Djarin into a trap with Grogu, nearly succeeding in capturing the baby.
- He ranked second on a Screen Rant list of the most interesting characters from the first season of the show, third on a separate list of the ten best characters from the show, and his costume was ranked seventh on a list of the ten best costumes in the first season.
What Makes Him Detestable?[]
- He led the Great Purge of Mandalore and is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Mandalorians in a night that would later be known as the Night of a Thousand Tears out of nothing other than a punishment to the Mandalorians for refusing to kneel before the Empire. Even after Bo-Katan Kryze surrendered the Darksaber to him in exchange for leaving her people alone, he still carried out the genocide.
- Among the casualties were Sabine Wren's family which she continued to mourn the death of her brother, father, and mother.
- He stands out from other Star Wars villains for his unique crime of trying to hunt all Mandalorians down into extinction, doing the worst he can to compensate for his lack of resources and keeping his Imperial remnant active long after the Empire's defeat.
- He seems to take perverse pleasure in getting on people's nerves, as shown when he kills one of his own officers for interrupting him and when he gloats to Grogu after capturing him.
- He is shown to be a Bad Boss, as he killed the Client and a group of stormtroopers just because he realized that the Client had been tricked by the Mandalorian and his allies, and also killed an officer only for interrupting him.
- He tipped Gorian Shord and his crew off to attack Nevarro out of spite for his previous defeat there.
- His cowardly side is shown when after Luke Skywalker boards his light cruiser, he opts to take his own life rather than get captured by the New Republic as he will likely be tried and executed as a war criminal, but before he can kill himself he gets knocked out by Cara Dune.
- He can be quite hypocritical, as for all his proclaimed loyalty to the Galactic Empire he has no problem with sabotaging Brendol Hux's work and shows no loyalty to Grand Admiral Thrawn, the leader of the Shadow Council. Additionally, he mocks Bo-Katan after disarming her, saying that Mandalorians are nothing without their "trinkets" yet he wears a suit of beskar armor which is Mandalorian technology.
- Overall, he is way too vile to be a Magnificent Baddie, as the show's third season depicts how evil he really is by targeting all Mandalorians out of unjustifiable hatred.
