Muzan Kibutsuji is the main antagonist of anime/manga series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.
He is voiced by Toshihiko Seki in Japanese and Greg Chun in English.
What Makes Him Entertaining?[]
- He has a cool and badass character design, with an outfit resembles Michael Jackson, and his genderbent form looks pretty attractive too.
- He is a competent fighter with strong demonic abilities, which makes him the biggest threat to Demon Slayer corps.
- His Japanese and English voice actors do a great performance of portraying his polite and affable nature, which is hiding his malicious and manipulative true nature.
- While it doesn't justify his actions, Muzan has a genuinely tragic backstory of being born sickly and desperately seeking a cure to avoid his death at age 20.
- He speaks in a polite and friendly tone in his human disguise to hide his evil nature. Even when he's acting in the role as a demon king he still keeps his faux affable attitude, unless when he really decides to kill someone.
- He keeps an intimidating and scary presence to both human and demons. Even the scariest demons tremble in fear upon hearing his name.
- Considering Akaza killed the beloved Rengoku, him berating Akaza was played for satisfaction to some extent.
What Makes Him Detestable?[]
- He is the evilest character in the entire franchise, being directly or indirectly responsible for every single tragedy and conflict in the story. After becoming a demon, he turned countless people into demons, while searching for a way to conquer sun, and founding the Twelve Demon Moon, group of most powerful demons that serve directly to him.
- Unlike most demons who have tragic backstories and sympathetic deaths (with several exceptions like Doma, Hantengu, Gyokko, Enmu and Kaigaku), Muzan is portrayed completely unsympathetic and irredeemable, only meant to be detested both by the audience and characters in the story.
- His excessive paranoia and fear of death makes him look like a pathetic coward. He seeks Blue Spider Lily just because he fears being burnt in the sunlight; He cowardly fled after being defeated by Yoriichi Tsugikuni, and became feared upon seeing Tanjiro's earrings.
- He is a failure-intolerant bad boss who controls his demon minions only by force. He often kills them for petty reasons, after Rui's death he killed all the Lower Moons except Enmu just because he thinks them useless.
- He is so evil that almost all of his demon minions hate him, only following him out of fear of being killed.
Trivia[]
- Muzan was considered as a Hate Sink for quite a long time, until it's determined that he has a menacing aura and terrifying presence as the Big Bad.
