Odin, also known as The All-Father is the main antagonist of the Norse Era of God of War. The ruler of Asgard, Odin displayed a limitless thirst for knowledge regarding everything, driving him to commit numerous atrocities across the Nine Realms among which, most infamously, was the near-extinction of the Giants. His desire to avoid death at the end of Ragnarok motivates all his actions in the Norse Era.

He is voiced by Richard Schiff.

What Makes Him Entertaining?[]

  • Richard Schiff's majestic performance, depicting Odin's thirst for knowledge as well as his penchant to commit unforgivable crimes in the very same scene.
  • His goal of accumulating knowledge isn't entirely wrong, only the terrible lengths which Odin went to secure them.
  • Genuinely loved his wife Fjörgyn and was heartbroken after she died.
  • Odin took many precautions to avert Ragnarok, such as capturing Skoll and Hati who are destined to chase after the sun and the moon.
    • While his preparations were revealed to be futile, it was because he got an incorrect prophecy.
  • To fool Kratos and his group into letting their guard down, he arranged a meet with them alongside Thor, and also impersonated Tyr and faked his rescue.
    • He basically managed to fool Kratos, the demi-god who hardly trusts anyone, Freya who used to be married to him as well as Mimir who was constantly tortured by him everyday for 109 years. He was only exposed because of his own rashness.
  • He also initially treated Atreus (Loki) well while trying to manipulate him and nearly managed to change his mind regarding what he heard from him.
  • His actions in the duology makes him an interesting foil to Kratos, a man who is struggling with the weight of his own actions in the Greek Era as well as being in odds with his own son.

What Makes Him Detestable?[]

  • Out of envy towards the Jotunns, Odin ordered Thor to kill everyone to acquire their forbidden knowledge.
    • To make matters worse, the Jotunns were also Odin's own ancestors.
  • Manipulated Skadi into killing her own father after being refused her hand in marriage, leading to her committing suicide.
  • Abused Freya after she refused to cast the immortality spell on him, and cursed her to never attack anyone after the marriage broke apart.
    • He also cursed her to never leave Midgard, meaning she could never go home.
  • After Mimir dared to encourage peace between the Nine Realms, Odin had him restrained on a tree for 109 years and creatively tortured him every single day, leading to Mimir feeling suicidal. Despite Mimir being partly responsible for the state of the Nine Realms, it was very excessive as Mimir genuinely felt remorse towards enabling Odin.
  • In order to manipulate Thor, Odin emotionally abused him and made him drink despite him being a recovering alcoholic.
  • He made light of the death of his own family members, such as Modi and Magni, even calling them useless in front of Thor.
  • After Brok realised that Tyr should not know anything that Atreus is actually Loki, Odin killed him out of sheer fury, ruining all his efforts to manipulate Kratos and his group which led to his defeat.
  • He used innocent Midgardians as bait in the possibility that Kratos and others will feel shame even if they managed to defeat him.
