Entertainingly Detestable Wiki

When the comet last came, my grandfather, Fire Lord Sozin, used it to wipe out the Air Nomads. Now, I will use its power to end the Earth Kingdom permanently. From our airships, we will rain fire over their lands, a fire that will destroy everything; and out of the ashes, a new world will be born, a world in which all the lands are Fire Nation and I am the supreme ruler of everything!
~ Ozai
You're weak, just like the rest of your people! They did not deserve to exist in this world — in my world! Prepare to join them. Prepare to DIE!
~ Ozai taunting Aang on the genocide of his people and trying to kill him.

Ozai is the main antagonist of Avatar: The Last Airbender, serving as the overarching antagonist of the first two seasons and the main antagonist of the third and final season.

He is the arch-nemesis of Avatar Aang as well as Zuko.

He is voiced by Mark Hamill who also voices Joker in the Arkhamverse as well as in the DC Animated Universe.

His Qualities[]

What Makes Him Entertaining?[]

  • Mark Hamill does a fantastic job with his hammy performance as Ozai, managing to make him sound very malevolent and fully human at the same time.
  • Despite his callousness towards Azula, he's not particularly cruel to her at all.
  • He has exceptional skills in the bending arts, being one of the world's greatest firebenders.
  • His climactic showdown with Aang is not only considered one of the most iconic scenes in western animation, but he is practically secreting "Evil is Cool" vibes during every second of it up until Aang gains the high ground. Even him preparing for the Earth Kingdom genocide and tapping into Sozin's Comet looks nothing short of badass.
  • He is very clever since he went to a private bunker not too far from the royal palace so he could observe what was going on during the eclipse from a relatively safe distance.
  • He is manipulative since he tells Zuko the truth of what happened to Ursa so he won't leave.
  • Despite being terrified of Aang's Avatar State, he at least attempts to shoot some fire blasts at him and embraces the likeliness of him dying, meaning he has some Villainous Valor.
  • Even after his defeat he still isn't a complete joke and is still a threat but just in a different way.
  • He once saved Zuko from drowning as a little boy even though he suberts this later.
  • He's ahead of his time since his advice to Zuko indirectly set the tone for the Harmony Restoration Movement as well as the United Republic of Nations for the better.
  • Aang's dreams about him are nothing short of hilarious, especially when he loudly proclaims, "My royal parts are showing!"
  • All in all, he shows not all villains need be three-dimensional and complicated, providing an utterly delightful foil to Zuko and Azula's moral complexity with his epically maniacal badness.
  • Subtly tried to corrupt Zuko into becoming evil again, to undo the influence of Iroh on him.

What Makes Him Detestable?[]

  • He abuses his own family remorselessly to the point of burning Zuko's face and even twisting events to make it sound like he deserved it.
  • He is a rapist since the last thing Ursa wanted was to be with him.
  • He is the second-most evil villain by far, only surprassesd by Unalaq (who wanted to not only impose his dark will upon the human world but the spirit world as well).
  • He is a sadist who thought his ex-wife Ursa was dead he also showed some sadism when he is fighting the Avatar, grinning and telling him the airbenders did not deserve to exist.
