“ | Oh, Ivo… you're no Maria. The moment I lost her, my family was gone forever! The only way to give Maria's life meaning is to destroy the world that took her from me. So I'm BURNING IT ALL DOWN! | „ |
~ Gerald downplaying his grandson while revealing his true plan to obliterate Earth in retaliation for Maria's death. |
Professor Gerald Robotnik is the main antagonist of the 2024 film Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the third main installment of the Sonic Cinematic Universe.
Much like his game counterpart, he is a brilliant scientist and the grandfather of Dr. Ivo Robotnik and the late Maria Robotnik, who had worked for the Guardian Units of Nations fifty years ago as part of Project Shadow, hoping he would be a great achievement in the future. However, after G.U.N. issued a warrant for his arrest for his shady practices, Gerald tried to escape with Shadow and Maria, with the latter being killed in an explosion caused by a soldier firing at a tank filled with Shadow's chaos energy.
Filled with vengeance, Gerald freed Shadow from his stasis, and recruited him, Ivo, and the latter's right-hand man Agent Stone, intending to get his hands on the very weapon that he designed for G.U.N.; The Eclipse Cannon, which he will use to destroy humanity in a spiteful murder-suicide, consumed by the grief and rage of losing his granddaughter.
He was portrayed by Jim Carrey, who also played Count Olaf in the 2004 live-action adaption of A Series of Unfortunate Events and the Grinch in the 2000 live-action adaptation of Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
His Qualities[]
What Makes Him Entertaining?[]
- Just like he did with Robotnik, Jim Carrey's over-the-top and bombastic performance made Gerald a very entertaining villain while maintaining seriousness and cunning.
- He has many comedic moments, such as licking Shadow's quill, the fourth wall break joke of Ivo and himself being played by the same actor, their family montage being in virtual reality, the iconic dance within the laser room to the song Galvinse and also in the final battle where he spanks his grandson and his anti-climatic death of getting zapped into nothingness.
- He is extremely intelligent, as he is a brilliant scientist who built the Eclipse Cannon while making sure it is nigh-foolproof and provided countermeasures for his plan. He later manipulated Ivo and Shadow into aiding his vengeance for Maria, only failing due to the intervention of Sonic and his friends.
- Despite being much more villainous than his original counterpart, Gerald still has a few sympathetic moments, as he lost his granddaughter Maria when they tried to escape with Shadow, and spends the remainder of his life plotting revenge on Earth for taking his granddaughter away.
- Memes were made from him, which made Gerald an entertaining and memorable villain all the way.
What Makes Him Detestable?[]
- Despite his sympathetic moments, this version of Gerald is much more heinous and evil than his original counterpart, who redeemed himself. Instead, he's depicted more as a man whose grief twisted him into becoming perhaps the worst version of himself, turning into a selfish and sadistic individual who intends on punishing all of humanity for taking his granddaughter away from him.
- He orchestrated the attack at the Chao Garden in an attempt to assassinate Commander Walters, despite the fact that there were other customers inside. This also led to Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles indirectly being framed by the attack and wanted by G.U.N.
- Despite loving Maria, he doesn't care about Ivo or Shadow as he used them as mere tools in his quest of vengeance. Even if he did once the both of them turn against him, he has no problem getting rid of them and would've subverted any potential care in them.
- He stole and activated the Eclipse Cannon, his creation commissioned by G.U.N, to destroy the Earth in his vengeance for Maria, intending to wipe out all life on the planet. This is something that shocked Robotnik so much that he redeemed himself.
- Despite meeting the criteria to be a Magnificent Baddie, he has undignified villainous breakdowns like “SO I’M BURNING IT ALL DOWN!!!!!” and “That’s…ELDER ABUSE!!!!” and his defeat is ultimately too humiliating for him to be one as his grandson snuck up on him before shoving Sonic's quill up his butt, launching him into the chaos energy field to be disintegrated.
