~ The Red Guy's second famous line in "Time Machine", showcasing his mischievous tendencies as a con-artist. |
The Red Guy, originally The Devil, is the main antagonist of the Cartoon Network series Cow and Chicken, as well as its spin-off series I Am Weasel. He is the archenemy of Cow, Chicken, I.M. Weasel and I.R. Baboon.
He was voiced by Charlie Adler.
What Makes Him Entertaining?[]
- Generally, he is extremely easy to laugh at (sometimes laugh with), due to acting like a hammy manchild in many scenes to count.
- He is a really goofy and comical "con-artistic" devil who's also an very laughable trickster entity whose flamboyant antics are shown as him actively relishing in causing mischief, chaos, scams and pranks wherever he is and whenever he likes to. The way he provides several hilarious lines in nearly all of his appearances, acts over-the-top and mean-spirited in every single scene he's in and hardly has any moments of genuine seriousness, all shows how he is treated in a more humorous and enjoyable manner rather than being a genuine threat or a generic doomsday villain.
- Many of his fraudulent crimes and generally opportunistic misdeeds are done purely for The Red Guy's amusement and enjoyment. Especially when the episode "I Scream Man", has him driving an "Eye Scream" truck to impersonate an ice cream man who loves screaming despite hating kids and not liking ice cream in itself (it doesn't help that being insane is a hobby Red Guy that passionately sings to an officer during by a ridiculous mental breakdown no less).
- Many of his alias names are pretty funny and really jocular since they are full of butt puns and very silly butt jokes that exaggerate his lack of pants.
- His lack of decency to wear clothes or even pants, and seems to enjoy mooning everyone he comes by while having a passionate hatred for wearing pants, makes him the most iconic version of the devil.
- He has many psychotic outbursts and mood-swings that exemplify how batshit insane he really is, especially in "I Scream Man" (where the Red Guy goes completely insane and sings that "yelling" is his hobby).
- He breaks the fourth wall numerous times throughout all of his appearances.
- He puts on multiple outfits and dissociative personas that fit the surreal situation Cow and Chicken are thrown into (even towards I.M Weasel and I.R Baboon). This means he can takes on roles of a male or a female, and will act it out for plans of mischief to work and to solely mess with Cow and Chicken.
- Most of his plans for messing with Cow and Chicken includes annoying and bothering Cow and Chicken, putting on many stunts, scamming and tricking people with con-games, butt-walking, rolling around and screaming during his mind-games are fun to watch. It's even more hilarious to seeing him getting comeuppance for his sadistic tendencies and deceptive antics as a mean-spirited conman.
- As such, his incompetence and getting karma for his own weirdness and immaturity is always treated as satisfying and hilarious.
- Being mostly a screw up with capturing an alligator named Davey in the episode "The Cow and Chicken Blues" and is depicted as a pathetically bumbling agent who stalked the titular duo in "The Ballad of Cow and Chicken" as prominent examples.
- He's not always portrayed as an antagonist since he is seen being affable or helping Cow and Chicken at times. Specifically by season 4 (the last season of Cow and Chicken), where he's far more likely to be on good terms with Cow and Chicken and much less likely to try and hurt or kill them.
- He happens to be affably evil, despite his antics as a sadistic devil and being a screwball con-artist, but he can also be polite, friendly, and even helpful towards Cow and Chicken (ex. helping Chicken learn kung-fu or learn how to whistle despite asking for Chicken's money to do so).
- In the episode "Dr. Bottoms The Pediatrician", after performing needless and impractical tests on Cow, this episode shows his most heroic moment by saving Chicken from getting devoured by Chicken's inner cells and letting himself get eaten by Cow to effectively save Chicken's life.
- He is shown to be tragic, which gives us a bit of a deep look in his character. As seen in the "Professor Longhorn Steer" episode, Red's mother feeds him gruel and keeps challenging him to fight her like a man (much to Red's displeasure). Red Guy is even revealed in I Am Weasel to have some tragic backstories like having a rude father and how his entire family is full of frauds; meaning Red Guy is just doing what his family taught him to be like.
- He showcases insecurity in episodes like "I Am Hairstylist" for example, where he acts as a officer who arrested everyone in a hair salon while growing hatred for hairstyling and barbers because of his sad backstory of getting a regular haircut, being laughed at by his family members and being judged for not being a regular boy as his family wanted him to be.
- He is sometimes a scapegoat for getting himself pummeled, and beaten up as a result of his own incompetence, such as getting his butt bit by Hyenas in the episode "Grizzly Beaver Safari" as karma for getting Cow and Chicken and their parents to drive in a car that exploded.
- He also happens to be really tragic since he was never appreciated by his parents in his youth, was forced to do things he didn't want to do by his neglectful dad, and appears to have a (somewhat) sympathetic meltdown about him being raised to act as a fraudster in I.M Weasel.
- He is On & Off, as he did some good deeds such as the episode "Journey to the Center of Cow" where he saved Chicken's life from being devoured by Cow's enzymes and sacrificed himself when he was ate by Cow.
- It's even explained in I.M Weasel that Red Guy being a fraud is what he was raised to be and like, and how his entire family are full of frauds; meaning Red Guy is just doing what his family had taught him to be like.
What Makes Him Detestable?[]
C&C[]
- Acting like a sadistic bully and heckler sometimes.
- Using his disguises such as a prison warden, and he often uses it to inconvenience others for sick jokes of his to amuse himself.
- Is sometimes whiny when he overreacts and makes big deals out of nothing almost all the time, such as him being scared of a spider.
- Willingly sets up things for disaster for quarters and also acting smug about it with the viewers.
- Bothering Cow and Chicken at any moment and does it so frequently it makes Red Guy oddly omnipresent.
- Slaughtering and incinerating countless chickens.
- Torturing Flem and Earl at a lunchroom.
- Forcing Cow, Chicken and fellow of the town's residents to wear painful braces.
- Allowing Cow, Chicken, and their parents to be brutally blown up in their car.
I.M Weasel[]
- Being more and more of a loudmouthed troublemaker than ever before, even to the point of throwing more meltdowns and breakdowns.
- Causing even more chaos and havoc, including the act of committing arson, often for a quick buck or for the sake of getting attention.
- One time he caused property damage to make himself seem noble for a quick buck.
- Bothering Weasel and I.R Baboon (the former moreso), and seems to enjoy inconveniencing any of them while encouraging and tempting I.R Baboon into doing stupid things.
- Two examples include making Weasel go to jail, falsely accused as a cannibal and spend 30 days falsely imprisoned in an isolated area, and also using cartoon malefic to physically abuse the Weasel and Baboon with slapstick violence.
- Sometimes stalking Cow and Chicken at times despite being in a different cartoon from where Cow and Chicken were in, which gets Supercow to beat him up in his cross-dressing disguise.
- Bombed Kansas from a plane due to taking the joke I.M Weasel said seriously.
- Showing no concern over harming an baboon with his electricity-powered theremin.
Trivia[]
- He is considered to be one of the best things about Cow and Chicken and I Am Weasel. In fact, he is what made the Cow and Chicken series well-liked by many people.
