Johann Schmidt, also known as the Red Skull and later the Stonekeeper, is a major antagonist in the Infinity Saga of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
He was portrayed by Hugo Weaving in Captain America: The First Avenger and by Ross Marquand from Avengers: Infinity War and onward.
His Qualities[]
What Makes Him Entertaining?[]
- As evil as he is, Hugo Weaving’s performance is so deliberately over-the-top that it’s hard to hate him too much.
- He cleverly uses his reassignment to the Alps to his own advantage, as it gives him enough secrecy to conduct HYDRA’s operations.
- When he captures Captain America, he doesn’t bother to gloat and instead opts to shoot him right there.
- He has a comedic moment in which he tells Captain America that he is a “great fan of his films.”
- It’s hard to mourn the Nazi officers that he slaughters, even if it’s entirely for his own gain.
- Unlike his comic counterpart, he’s not a racist and actually despises the Nazi pseudoscience of Aryan supremacy; he believes that super-soldiers like himself are above humanity, and therefore the distinction of race is meaningless.
- While leading Thanos and Gamora as well as Hawkeye and Black Widow to the Soul Stone, Red Skull showcases his knowledge about the Stone and the realization that he could never achieve it despite it within his grasp.
What Makes Him Detestable?[]
- He tries to kill many millions of people in his quest for world domination.
- He is an extreme egomaniac, who, as Chester Phillips puts it, is willing to blow up half the world in order to prove he’s a god.
