Ryuk is the deuteragonist of Death Note franchise. He is the Shinigami who inadvertently gave Light Yagami the Death Note and instigated his killing spree.

What Makes Him Entertaining?[]

He is one of the funniest characters in Death Note franchise. He has an obsession towards apples, and would get a withdrawal symptom if he goes too long without eating them, involving twisting himself up like a pretzel and doing handstands. He is also shy with girls, like when Misa Amane hugs him, he goes invisible out of shyness.
He is genuinely affable towards humans. Although he would get amused by human's death, he still treat them with respect. He would give an honest answer when Near asks him questions, and would give genuinely beneficial advice to Light and Misa.
Brian Drummond gives a great performance of playing his prominent callous and manipulative nature while also giving him a raspy voice and along with a great amount of charisma to his character, this is so far one of his most popular roles, along voicing Vegeta in the Ocean Dub.
He has some sense of honor. He is honest with Light from the start that he will kill him when it’s his time to die; He shows respect to Soichiro Yagami since he never used the Death Note he got to die happy; He also praises Donald Trump's shrewd decision of announcing to the world that he has the Death Note but does not use it.
Although he eventually betrayed Light, writing Light's name on his death note before sadistically smiling at his death (in the manga only), considering how irredeemable Light has become, this scene is pretty satisfying to watch.

What Makes Him Detestable?[]

He is ultimately the cause of all the bad events of the story. In order to get amusement, he dropped a death note in Light's school and made Light pick up it, causing Light to be corrupted by the absolute power of killing people, eventually becoming a heartless psychopath that's even worse than him.
Years after Light's death, he did the same act and caused Minoru Tanaka to pick up a Death Note, hoping that Minoru would become the next Kira to ease his boredom. This caused another big trouble that even his boss had to get on his case.
Although his motivation is getting amused, Ryuk is also a very sadistic Shinigami who would laugh maniacally towards human's death and suffering.
He treats his fellow shinigami Sidoh as trash, stealing Sidoh's Death Note and drop it on the human realm, causing Sidoh in a risk of running out lifespan. It is also mentioned that he tried to write other Shinigamis' name on his Death Note, only failed to kill them because Shinigamis are immuine to it.
He also doesn't care about his human partners at all, betraying Light when Light is defeated, and not warning Minoru the new rule of Death Note causing Minoru's death.
Despite basically being a comic relief character, he also has several very dark and serious moments with pure nihilism, especially in the finale of the manga.
