Scar is the main antagonist of Disney's The Lion King franchise.
He was the former leader of the Lion Guard and younger brother of King Mufasa, the uncle of Simba, the protagonist, who overthrows his brother by throwing him off a cliff. Later, he is defeated by his nephew.
He was famously voiced by Jeremy Irons in the first film. In the direct-to-video sequels, he was voiced by Jim Cummings, who also backed up Irons in "Be Prepared", and in The Lion Guard, he was voiced by David Oyelewo.
His Qualities[]
What Makes Him Entertaining?[]
- Scar has arguably one of the best Disney villain songs (Be Prepared) of all time.
- He has many comedic moments, with dry wit and him calling the Hyenas idiots as example, and even after his character was derailed in the second half he still has one comedic moment of hating the classic Disney song "It's A Small World".
- His backstory of being a former leader of the Lion Guard who protected the Pride Lands and partly corrupted into evil through a snake bite delivered by the Strange Lion make him a rather compelling character.
- Has many evil is cool moments, especially his villain song.
- While some believe him sadistically playing with the mouse before eating him was made to make him hated, others find it interesting and shows that he is actually evil.
- He has a cool design that draws on Disney’s previous evil lion, Prince John, being thin and gangly, but adds a mane to make it clear he is a man of action.
- He has multiple magnificent qualities in the first half of the film, being manipulative and cunning.
- Unlike many Disney villains, he initially succeeded in his plans, which makes his defeat even more satisfying.
- His character was re-railed in The Lion Guard and goes back to his manipulative schemer self.
- He has many iconic lines such as the aforementioned "I'm surrounded by idiots" and "Oh, I quiver with FEAR".
What Makes Him Detestable?[]
- Kills his own brother Mufasa by causing a wildbeaat stampede and throwing him in it causing him to be stomped to death to become ruler of the pride lands and attempted to kill his own nephew Simba ,who was only a cub at the time.
- Ultimately, he becomes less entertaining after becoming king, as he loses all his magnificent qualities afterward, and becoming a cowardly tyrant who sells out his henchmen to save his own neck, which leads to his downfall.
- His actions are vile enough to stand out among Disney villains, as most of them are VBs while he is Pure Evil.
- After getting bitten by the snake and losing all his positive traits, he killed his fellow Guard members by using the Roar of the Elders when he was young, which led to him losing his Roar.
- Even after his rerailment, he does not reach Magnificent Baddie status due to being motivated by spite for his defeat and death.
Trivia[]
- For a long time, Scar was considered to be a full-on Hate Sink for his actions and was initially a Magnificent Baddie before Mufasa's death, due to him losing his magnificent traits in the second half of the film, however he eventually was removed after being declared to having too many entertaining qualities as well as his character rerailment in The Lion Guard, which transformed him back into a manipulative schemer and once being a genuine hero.
