“ | Teamwork begins with two people trusting each other. (Steps on Tuba’s hand) But you? You’re no person. | „ |
~ Simon betraying and murdering Tuba- his most infamous quote. |
“ | Your numbers speak louder than words, void! | „ |
~ Simon rising to power and gloating about it in Grace’s face as he reveals his new position to her. |
Simon Laurent is the secondary antagonist of Infinity Train, appearing as a background character of Book One - The Perennial Child, one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Grace Monroe) of Book Two - Cracked Reflection and the deuteragonist/main antagonist of Book Three - Cult of the Conductor. He was once an abandoned boy who was brought in and adopted by Grace Monroe to where he would grown up to become two of the founding members of the Apex, where they exploit the train and its passengers to further their own agenda and escape the train by gaining the highest number. After a confrontation with the Conductor which leads to Grace realizing the errors of her ways, Simon goes of the deep end and usurps control of her position to continue the old ways of the Apex.
He is voiced by Kyle McCarley, who is best known for his role as Shigeo Kageyama from Mob Psycho 100 as well Ryo Asuka from Devilman Crybaby.
His Qualities[]
What Makes Him Entertaining?[]
- For starters, he has a Freudian Excuse, as he was once a young boy who looked up to the talking cat Samantha as a maternal figure before she abandoned him, which lead to him being taken in as the first member of the Apex by Grace Monroe.
- He’s very brave and confident, as he is able to take on challengers without showing any fear at them and is able to be sure of himself when he’s being talked down on.
- He is very strong and agile, as he is able to easily beat Grace Monroe in physical combat as well as being able to use wall walking shoes to get around places and be able to use harpoons and other weapons with little to no incompetence.
- He is very cunning as he managed to manipulate most of the characters around him and as he managed to usurp Grace Monroe’s position as the leader of the Apex.
- He has other redeeming qualities that humanize him such as feeling remorse for some of his actions how his death is played for sympathy, with it being horrifying by the standards of the show with Grace and the Apex even mourning him.
- Known for his popular voice performances from voicing villains like the disgusting Shinji Matou from Heaven’s Feel and the charismatic Ryo Asuka from Devilman Crybaby, Kyle McCarley does an excellent performance bringing out Simon’s psychotic and ruthless personality, as well as his sympathetic aspects and his maniacal laugh.
- His presence and his cool gadgets give him a “Evil is Cool” vibe, his final battle against Grace was as well nothing short of being badass.
- He serves as a spiritual antithesis to the shows whole theme as it is based on the idea about emotional and personal growth, as while most of the characters like Grace Monroe and Tulip Olsen learn to accept their problems and try to improve better, he is completely resistant to being affected by these changes and stay’s fixed to his pre-fixed supremacist belief system and uses this and his arrogance as a coping system for his emotional trauma. His ideology also proves the themes of egalitarianism and tolerance and according to Owen Dennis, the creator of Infinity Train, he is partially inspired by emotionally damaged and isolated boys in real life. This gives him a deep level of complexity to his character and makes him an interesting dark parallel to other characters and villains like Grace Monroe and Amelia Hughes
- Overall, despite his monstrous actions and being seen as the most irredeemable villain in the series, he is still given sympathy from the narrative and because of his emotional trauma. He is also probably one of the most memorable villains of all of Infinity Train and is probably the best parts of the show.
What Makes Him Detestable?[]
- He was emotionally manipulative and abusive to Hazel and Grace Monroe by lying about them about the true purpose of the train.
- Because of him being a devoted member of the Apex, he maintains a degraded view on the other denizens on the train and views them as non-humans, which leads to the death of Tuba, which is one of the darkest moments of the show.
- He is the evilest character in the show as his actions go far above any antagonist in the series, and his lack of empathy makes him pretty detestable in his views and his mass murders and terrorism make him far beyond redemption.
