“ | Soundwave superior! Autobots inferior! | „ |
~ Soundwave's catchphrase. |
Soundwave is a major antagonist in the Transformers franchise. He is Megatron's most loyal minion and transforms into a cassette player.
In the original cartoon, he was voiced by Frank Welker, who also voiced Megatron in the same series. In the Japanese dub and The Headmasters, he was voiced by Issei Masaune.
What Makes Him Entertaining?[]
- He is the most loyal subordinate of Megatron as well as one of his most competent troops for a number of reasons:
- He is a master spy that infiltrates enemy territory in his alternate form as a microcassette recorder without being noticed or suspected.
- He can detect and jam any transmission.
- He is capable of reading minds of both Cybertronians and humans, via monitoring electrical brain impulses.
- Because Soundwave is an efficient and competent soldier, he is one of the few Decepticons Megatron genuinely trusts and respects.
- His unique monotone, vocoded voice has made him a particularly memorable character in the original cartoon.
- He engages in a thrilling sonic battle with his Autobot counterpart Blaster.
- Besides his handheld blaster, his signature weapon is his shoulder-mounted concussive cannon.
- While a spy master, he is pretty strong in combat (even without his minions), as he can handle several Autobots at times.
- He is portrayed as the complete opposite of Starscream in several key aspects:
- While Starscream is driven by treacherous ambition, Soundwave is unwavering in his loyalty.
- Starscream often acts out of fear, whereas Soundwave displays true bravery.
- Starscream is frequently portrayed as incompetent and ineffective, while Soundwave consistently delivers solid results—something Megatron acknowledges, often praising Soundwave and his subordinates as much as he criticizes Starscream.
- Because of Soundwave's steadfast loyalty, if Megatron were to be incapacitated, Soundwave would be the primary obstacle standing between Starscream and the Decepticon leadership.
- When learning the Autobots were searching for the rogue Dinobots, he mind-controlled Sludge into fighting Grimlock and caused many Autobots coming to the rescue to be deactivated, and stole fuel from a nearby power plant while the Autobots were distracted.
What Makes Him Detestable?[]
- He is a major participant in the Decepticons' crimes against Autobots and other innocents, be it killing Cybertronians or enslaving, brainwashing and/or endangering humans.
- He is not above manipulating, blackmailing or betraying his fellow Decepticons, usually to gain Megatron's favor.
