Sundowner is a one of the two secondary antagonists in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. He is a deranged warmonger who wants to plunge the world into killing and warfare out of his belief that war is a natural and beautiful part of what humanity is until he is defeated by Raiden. He is played by Crispin Freeman.
His Qualities[]
What Makes Him Entertaining?[]
- He is an icon of the Metal Gear franchise in his own right.
- He is an extremely intelligent, resourceful, and cunning warrior.
- His armor looks cool, especially during his boss fight.
- He provides comedy throughout the video game, always having a humorous attitude and treating his own irredeemable nature as a joke, designed to make the audience enjoy hating him and yet be entertained by his villainy at the same time. That being said, he also has zero hang-ups about accepting his low morality and openly proclaiming himself to be a supervillain. His line "I'M F***ING INVINCIBLE!!!" is also a very iconic one.
- His boss them, the metal song "Red Sun" when he duels with Jack the Ripper is epic and iconic to listen to.
- Crispin Freeman did a fantastic job with his voice acting.
What Makes Him Detestable?[]
- He is a wholly evil villain with no redeeming qualities; while his teammates and superior have good intentions, Sundowner cares only for his priority of an international armed conflict to justify sadistically romanticizing war. He has been making money by selling weapons and fueling wars for a long time.
- He has committed many war crimes which includes desecrating remains, subjecting POWs to inhumane torture, and constantly finding unethical ways to slay his enemies.
- He is infamous for his twisted appreciation of the September 11 attacks that cost thousands of innocent lives. While most people were obviously devastated by the tragic and fateful day putting it lightly, he was delighted and referred to the immediate aftermath of the calamity as "the good old days".
- His past is way too petty to come anywhere close to justifying his unforgivably depraved endeavors, proving it was by his own choice that he willingly embraced the dark side.
- Declaring that Africa is getting too peaceful for his liking, he kicks off the game's events by staging a terrorist attack and abducting African Prime Minister N'mani in addition to unleashing a Metal Gear RAY to attack an African city to ensure Africa descends into war. He sadistically torments N'mani over the "benefits" of war by cutting his neck before impaling him on his sword, with N'mani's blood flecking onto Jack's face.
- The most disgusting thing he does is abducting hundreds of orphaned children and surgically removing their brains so he can brainwash them into hosting cyborg bodies by using violent VR simulators encouraging them to destroy everything in their path. To add salt to the wound, he makes a profit by selling the children's unused organs.
