The Beast is the main antagonist of the 2014 Cartoon Network miniseries Over the Garden Wall.
It is the monster of the place known as The Unknown. The Beast's goal is to take the souls of the people who come to his woods, in this case, the brothers named Wirt and Greg.
He was voiced by Samuel Ramey and by Arata Hino in the Japanese dub.
What Makes Him Entertaining?[]
- He is extremely mysterious and scary, being hidden in the dark with only his pale glowing eyes showing up, giving him a strong presence of Evil-is-cool.
- His voice is very deep and cold, perfectly demonstrating his manipulative and sadistic nature, thanks to Samuel Ramey's wonderful performance.
- He has a very cool and iconic villain song "Tralalala, tralalala, Chop the wood to light the fire".
- He is highly intelligent and manipulative, can trick others into doing what he desires, and convincing dozens of travelers to give up hope.
What Makes Him Detestable?[]
- He is the evilest character in the series, being responsible many travelers transforming into Edelwood trees after they lose hope, which is a fate worse than death.
- He tricked the woodsman into believing that his daughter's soul was sealed inside the lantern, forcing him to grind the travelers' souls into oil to keep her soul lit.
- He nearly makes Greg freezed to death and transforms into an Edelwood tree, then tries to manipulating Wirt into becoming the new lantern bearer, falsely promising him that Greg's soul will live on as the burning flame of the lantern.
- After Greg points out it is The Beast's own soul that is sealed in the lantern, he goes furious and desperstely persuades the woodsman to kill the two boys by his axe.
