All warfare is based on deception. For years, the West's hypocrisy has made the world a battlefield. The corrupt talk; while our brothers and sons spill their own blood. But deceit cuts both ways. The bigger the lie, the more likely people will believe it, and when a nation cries for vengeance, the lie spreads like a wildfire. The fire builds, devouring everything in its path. Our enemies believe that they alone dictate the course of history, and all it takes is the will of a single man.
~ Makarov's speech in the intro cutscene to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
It doesn't take the most powerful nations on Earth to create the next global conflict. Just the will of a single man.
~ Makarov's infamous motto.
Remember: no Russian.

His Qualities[]

What Makes Him Entertaining?[]

  • He is a highly intelligent man who has executed multiple terrorist attacks by disguising himself as an extremist.
  • His voice sounds cool thanks to Roman Varshavsky's awesome vocal performance, which led to Makarov becoming a well-written and iconic villain in the franchise. In fact, he is so famous and popular that he is one of the best video game villains in history.
  • He has an infamous motto which is featured in the reveal trailer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
  • His philosophy on war and corruption isn't entirely wrong.
  • Gave Price Shepherd's location to get rid of him and tried to kill the surviving Task Force 141 after Shepherd is killed.
  • Overall, he lives up to his "Evil is cool" presence and gives off a genuinely complex vibe.

What Makes Him Detestable?[]

  • He had Khaled Al-Asad kill thousands of U.S Marines, giving him some personal villainy towards General Shepherd since he went down a villainous path.
    • Due to Makarov's actions, Shepherd betrayed and killed Ghost and Roach (two fan-favourite characters in Modern Warfare 2), which is remembered to fans as one of the most shocking moments in the franchise.
  • He instigates a terrorist attack at the Zakhaev International Airport, killing many innocent civilians. Then, he killed Joseph Allen in cold blood and tried to frame the Americans as being responsible for the attack, which leads to the start of World War 3.
  • He intended to launch multiple terrorist attacks around Europe to allow the Russian army to invade to escalate World War 3. He then orders a chemical attack in London and many other European capital cities with the attack in London killing an innocent child and her family. He even kidnaps the Russian president and holds him hostage.
  • He kills Soap (a beloved character) by blowing up the building he was living in, and then he kills his old ally Yuri.
  • He attempts to kill Captain Price but is restrained from doing so when Price hangs him, which leads to his well-deserved death.
  • He is not loyal to any flag or country nor does he care about their set of ideals and trades blood for money.
  • He doesn't care about anyone but himself. Even his allies fear him and he never shows any emotions when he sees them suffering or dying.
  • He engages in torture, human trafficking (including sex enslavement), and genocide, which are highly atrocious and disgusting crimes.

Trivia[]

  • Vladimir Makarov was initially considered a Hate Sink, but it was later decided that his cool factors overshadow his hateable factors, of it not just being purely subjectively on aesthetics, which led to him becoming Entertainingly Detestable.
